Ok, i've been searching through the forum about stall converters and in the process, the question of how they work or even how to use them has been asked but not answered many times. Also, how the stock converter is used and what happens to either the stock or hi-stall converter when the rpm limit is exceeded. If someone out there really knows about this, share your wisdom please!!

you ask how to use them , a higher stall convertor on a street car is designed that way so it drives close to normal , if its too high it isnt very efficient and will be a bugger to drive and create a lot of heat
from my experience with clevelands , when a bigger cam is used , it increases the power up top but sacrifices it down low , so its a pig down low/doesnt idle good etc , so the convertor is used to lockup( or nearly)later in the rev range , this is usually about when the cam kicks in you need the whole package to suit each other - cam, carbs, diff ratio , weight of car , tyre diameter , convertor etc id talk to a convertor specialist or ask the same question in the v8 section to get one built costs in excess of $500 though |

hmm, this is gonna be a bit of a pickle. So many factors. Do you use your brake for it to be useful?

if drag racing you can use your brake and stall it up a bit more yes , when drag racing at the track there are a few different ways to STAGE the car and take off , there are heaps more poeple on here that know more than me about the subject though

I have a 2700-2800 rpm stall. It was set this way as the stock cam in the 5.0 comes on about 3300 and its all over by about 4500. I use 235/60/15 MT Street ET's, and my best run to date is 13.107 on NOS. When i stage, i hold it on the converter with the brakes, and on the lastr yellow i mash the pedal. This gives me 1.8 60ft times, but again, on NOS. my reaction time is between.5 and .6 usually. But i shallow stage, which is something else again. Crescent motors in Sydney did my stall and a massive trans cooler for about 1100 fitted from memory.

ive been taught to use the handbrake as well, but Ive never raced a car with slicks. with regular tyres the few mates I have that use highstalls have to use the handbrake as well as mashing the brake pedal or their back wheels will be spinning once they reach the stall point.
