Could be a number of things but i would start by checking tie rod ends, ball joints but most of all steering rack ends.

its the rack nuts, loosen them off and spray crc or grease between the rack and cross member, then tighten up thw two 18mm nuts

The rack bolts are 13mm, if it was the rack bolt/s it would have to be both loose for it to tap as described and would come from both sidesalong with play in the steering. I would put money on the left rack end as its the side that cops all the bumps and wears out first.

The rack ends can be bought for around $50 a pair and are pretty straight forward to replace. You need to count how many turns when removing from the tie rod. But to check if it is the rack ends you have to put the car up on ramps and peel back the rack boots from the inside to access the rack ends. Start the engine and have someone turn the steering wheel back and forth, check for any play in the rack end ball joint where the boot was peeled back.
Oh and the input shaft is on the right side so it wont be that. |

I would be checking the cheap options first, check the rack mount bolts first (pretty common for being loose), check cross-member bolts, if that fails pay $14.00 and an 2hrs of your time and get pedders to check it, I did that's all it was and they tightend them for me.
