hey all,
as the title says my steering rack is creaking. it started a couple weeks ago and is getting louder now so i am starting to worry a little bit. it creaks when i turn the steering wheel, mainly at lower speeds, it doesnt creak as i hit bumps in the road etc.
is this common thing, i think it is the steering rack, i got under the car and it sounds like that is where it comes from..
anyone got any opionions on what it is/ 'may be'

thank you very much

have u checked ur steering fluid? if its running low then there is ur problem. but if u say that its getting worse.....this might mean u are losing steering fluid and it might actually be ur steering rack or steering switch thingy-ma-bob...........check if anything is leaking or signs of oil around the steering rack.

phong =P~

Have you checked the basics like the mounting bolts, worn rack ends, upper and lower ball joints and other parts like the steering shaft.

i dont think its leaking anything, i filled i up a little while ago, shes probaly a little overfilled. i havn't checked to much else, the sound definatly comes from the steering rack, unless its the universal joint in the steering shaft just above it.

I would seriously check the 2 bolts for mounting the rack. Think they are 13 or 14 mm from memory.

Ghia steering is power AND Electrically assisted (falcon only Power), if you can not find fault pay Pedders to check it out its cheap but do not sign for them to do work if you want to do it yourself

Electrically in a soleniod to adjust pressure from the power steering pump, hence the speed sensitive steering. Its still hydraulic.

sounds like your car never had the steering recall done.
take it back to ford and find out if it did or not.

BA's do it all the time... so i see no reason why an AU couldnbt do it as well, remove the 2 rack bolts, (18mm) slide the rack back a little bit and put a bit of grease on the studs, retorque the studs to 80nm and hey presto - no noises :)

yeah au1 and 2 had a recall for the steering.
it's not hard to do your self though.

basicly all they do for it is take both the mount nuts off clean the thread, nut, and as much of the rack and mounting sufaces as you can get to. put some graphite grease on the thrad and RETORQUE to specs cast onto the engine crossmember
