Are both the I6 and V8 steering racks the same unit? In EF and EL's??
ie: will a I6 steering rack fit a V8 K frame??

aren't the k-frames for the I6 and V8's the same in the ef and el's?

K-Frames are the same...
I have heard that a V8 rack has a slightly faster ratio than a 6 due to the extra weight on them. But not confirmed. |

So its only the engine mounts that are different. Cheers

The ONLY thing different with 6 and 8's is that the 8 does not run a switch where as every ford 6(i6 or not) that runs a rack has a switch.
Everything else is the same, from mounting points to rack ends to guts and also the way the steering column joins to pinion. If you have 1 of each next to each other, you will see on the 8, that where the switch SHOULD be, it is just blanked off. So unless you change the pinion housing on the rack (simple job, 2 allen key screws and a seal) to the one that you want, it will not work properly. The 6's ecu needs to know when to speed up revs for turning corners as MOST people are off the accel goin round. So the engine needs to keep revs up for pump so that the rack turns with ease. Where as the 8 (which is the same pump) has diff settings that keep your revs up. I thats what I have always been told by people I learnt off of. By the way, I build them, thats how I know.

I will be running a DL ECU shortly, how do i go about the speed sensitive power steering on a V8 model?

As far as steering ratios go, all E series + XH XR's run an 18.5:1 ratio. There could be a different ratio for V8's, but no manual I've read mentions anything.
All I6 XH's except XR's run a 21:1 ratio rack.

and the simple answer is no, but yes.
No, the racks are different between 6 and 8 but Yes, the v8 rack will fit the i6 k frame. (which are the same anyway!) Only diff is the idle up solenoid - which "might" cause the car to stall at idle when you turn - though i do not know... I have seen many taxis with out that switch and it works fine.... also i am writing this in the pitch black and has taken me 10 mins to write..... |

You will need a rack with with all the appropriate SSPS gear on it <-- hard to find, but I have 2. Plus, You would have to run the wiring from the engine bay to the ECU. <-- easily done. Are you planning to change the steering column too, as that will need to be swapped. The box car colums are different. |

the racks are also different ef to el, where the column joins the rack the ef models have about double the number of teeth than the el, so you may have to do some modding there if you have bits and peaces.

Its not so much that there is more teeth, its the length of the pinion. If you look at an EF then an EL, you will see that the pinion on the EL is about an inch longer than the EF, plus also your comment about the diff splines they have. But if he is going for a SSPS rack, then that does not really become an issue as only the EL GHIA 6 & 8 and EL Fairlanes have SSPS in the whole FORD range. See pic below. And Look at key down bottom, forgot to highlight that....Note 5...

I have a EF steering colum... Does that mean i need an EL colum???!!! And yes i have a DL ECU

I will confirm which rack you will need ASAP, I think it comes down to the electrics side of things....they will both fit.
As for the steering column, yes you will need an EL column, unless you feel like shortening your EF one. Also, just for clarifaction, could please let us all know, exactly what your doing, and what you already have. ie- ssps 6cyl rack into el 8?
