Hey,
My Fairmont EF2 shakes pretty crazy when driving at lower speeds (and higher sometimes too). The steering wheel just shakes backwards and fowards like it's lose. A few people have said it needs a wheel alignment but one was done recently and it still had the problem. Any ideas? |

Loose or faulty wheel bearings would be the next place to look. Next - warped rotors - you should be able to feel this when braking. Lastly the steering rack could be worn, there is a pinion adjustment that can take the shimmy out of the steering wheel but this is normally only in the 100 to 120kph range not low speed. Cheers TW.

OK thanks for the advice. I'll swap fronts and backs and if that doesn't work ill swap each wheel for the spare to see if ones bent or out of round.
twason, what will the braking feel like if i have warped rotors? |

instead of the brakes being smooth as you brake it will "pulse" thru the car, as the pads grab onto the higher faceing of the rotor, it will brake slightly harder then when its just going over the normal or lower part of the rotor face..
This is somewhat like braking medium/soft/medium/soft/medium/soft...etc pretty fast. If you brakes feel smooth while braking, then safe to say rotors are fine n to look else where. Have you had the car lowered lately or have you bottomed out, hit any potholes or anything out of the ordinary to help work out what causes this vibration? Id personally go wheel bearings, as they are always good to change even if not shot, as your car will roll smoother/easier if they havnt been looked at in a long time. Good luck, oh and also maybe look at uni joints if you cant find the issue?

PS a dead wheel bearing can make small and big vibrations at any speed, usually higher tho - it can also make grinding noises as mine were at one stage.
When they havnt been serviced/replaced in ages they will somewhat slow the car down while rolling free as there is more friction in them.. When you get them replaced, realise there is a front and back bearing in each front left/front right/rear left/rear right - if you replace one n not the other (cheaper way out, many ppl do it) this is basically pointless. The bearings in the back of the car are rarely looked at as much as they appear to have a slightly longer life than the fronts. If you do change them, make sure you use propper grease n spend a good portion of time packing it in as its not uncommon to replace bearings n find out only to hear them few weeks/months later as they werent full with grease and you got issues again. Sorry to ramble.

No, I haven't had the car lowered recently but when I bought the car the old owner restored it to original height, he had lowered springs in it but put it back to normal. Could this be anything to do with it? He had a wheel alignment done after this.

i wld say it maybe wheel bearing or give the wheels a balance up i wldnt say its brake shudder as it wld occur all the time mainly at hard breakn at high speeds possible it could be a worn bush jst have to do one thing at a time until ya find the problem

Yes, I'd put my money on this. Get a wheel balance done on your tyres and if it turns out not to be this then consider wheel bearings.

My brother rekons he does notice a braking pulse when he had my car, i didnt though. Aw well ill check it all over this weekend

Just a thought here, if its been lowered then the diff pinion angle will be wrong, if it was adjusted to be correct when lowered and this was not reversed when raised to normal then it will be wrong again.
