G'day all,
I have a strange noise when turning the steering wheel in different directions. I first noticed the noise while parking in a carpark and have since worked out it can happen neally 100% of the time after changing the steering wheel turning direction. Its like a click and happens anywhere when going from lock to lock in either direction. It is like a thread is loose and the suspension or steering gets to a point when whatever it is moves and jumps over the thread. You can even feel it happen through your foot on the driveshaft tunnel. All steering and suspension components seem tight, Dampers are good along with wheel bearings and there seems to be no abnormal wear on the front tyres. As far as I know te car has not bounced of gutters or large potholes in the last six months. Does anyone know what the noise could be and where to look or have others had this problem but have never found the cause? thanks EFfutura |

Could it be your rack?

I had the exact same problem in my old ED.
Took it to pedders and they said it was a loose nut in the rack which they tightened for $5 and it went away. Id take it to them to do a $14 check |

Ive heard that there was a problem with the mounting of the rack in the BA. One side is on a rubber bush but the other is alloy against alloy and can click or creak under load when turning. Ford may have a kit to rectify this, I think its just a washer to seperate the 2 bolted alloy surfaces.

My BA MKII XR8 does the exact same thing. Mine also moves around a little when travelling on the highway. I'm not sure if these are related, but I've had it to pedders twice, Ford service once, and another wheel alignment place and none of them have been able to resolve either problem.
Let me know how you go. |

BA's are notorious for throwing ball joints. the vast majority of ford service repairs on BA's were balljoints, some cars were in there every month or two, the design is s**t.
get your ball joints checked.

most likely cause is the rack mounts as has been suggested.

I have checked and tightened the rack mounts, but didn’t take any notice of the rubber bushes that have been mentioned..
