HI everyone,

I have an AU XR8 which has had a manual conversion. I noticed when dropping the back of the gearbox to do a short shifter installation that I have a problem...

The threads on the gearbox crossmember (passenger side) have been damaged. When I do them up, they wont lock tight, slip on the thread and loosen. It seems the threads have been partially stripped I guess.

My question is what can I do about it? Where do these actually bolt into? THe chasis? Floor?

Could I retap the thread? Any suggestions would be great. Its not a big issue at the moment but will need to be fixed obviously.

IMO you need to tap a thread for a slightly larger hi-tensile bolt. If you go to Total Tools or All Tools, they can supply you with the bolts. Buy a suitable tapered tap off eBay.

I finally got to have a look. There is basically a thread inside of the sub frame of the car. These have been stripped...

All I can think of is a tap or a helicoil? Can these threads be accessed from inside the car at all?

helicoil from underneath

the kit will come with the correct tap

the only thing i can think of is the thickness of the metal in the chassis
as you have to drill out the old thread ( with the correct size drill bit ) and then re tap that

I was wondering about that too. I cant find any information on it. There must be a way to fix it. It is very common on alot of cars (google search) just not our falcons.

I also wonder if I could hole saw drill a small hole in the floor and run a whole new high tensile nut and bolt through the hole, removing the thread system all together..

Could I just put some spot welds on the edges of the bracket to the floor and neatly use an angle grinder to remove them if I have to remove the crossmember?

Seriously i would say just re tap the thread.
A bolt and nut.. just a bad idea.
Welding it.. why?

Is there enough material in the floor rail though? That has been a worry of a few people as above.

Well you won't be drilling that much larger. I think they're m10 bolts or something so just go up to m12 it's only 2mm more radius

Yeah thats fair enough. I was told that because it was converted the underfloor structure may be different and therefore less material but no one can confirm it. I agree a retap or helicoil would be nice and easy. Just dont want to risk having them fatigue and fail.

Is AU different to EL where there is a 'nut' in the rail that can be replaced?

If there is a but, I can't see a way to get too it without cutting into the floor skin from the inside.
