Hey guys,

I've snapped my clutch cable again *shrug* on my EF T5 manual box.

This is the 2nd one in 3 months or so. It's ridiculous!

Both occasions it has snapped under the car where the cable meets the fork on the gearbox.

Pulling the metal nib clean off. I've had word it could be slowly twisting off over time snapping a metal strand at a time as it weakens.

Could it be a fork problem? Or do I need a stronger cable from somewhere?

Are there any super-heavy-duty-race-spec clutch cables I can source?

Cheers

you might have to replace your insulator on the clutch fork. when mine snapped down there the two forks were bent abit and rubbing on the cable, and i just had to replace my mates as his rubber was f**k and changing the angle of it so it was rubbing on the cable

The one I have is made by flexible drive agencies. It's lasted a year and a half so far.

the ones i get from repco are flexible drive agency ones. it must be hit and miss with them. one lasted 1.5 years, the next only 3 months, but that would have been due to the bent insulator fork. after i changed insulators, the next one lasted 6 months before snapping.

Does anyone have a photo of the insulator on a clutch fork?

My cable is a Flexible Drive Agencies one from Burson. At $81 a pop it's a pricey problem.

I'll post a photo of my cable soon incase you guys can see anything wrong.

For a car part that's used everyday it should be freakin' Titanium strength!

Thanks ranga83, yep I've got the metal nib of the clutch cable sitting in that insulator.

I'd zip-tied the metal nib at that point last time to have better clutch pedal reaction. That probably didn't help.

What's funny too is I'd wrapped the clutch cable all through the engine bay with thermal protection wrap and it still snapped underneath. *Huff*

Either the aftermarket ones are absolute rubbish or something is a miss.
Not sure if mine is genuine or not, but I've gone through two clutches, a dampener and a firewall over a span of four years and haven't had a cable failure yet. Just saying.

I replaced mine with a genuine Ford one and that snapped on me after 1.5 years. The original second hand cable that came with the conversion out of an EF is still going.

Also when you route the cable, make sure that it enters the hole at the bell housing straight, not curved. The cable could end up rubbing on the bell housing/sandwich plate causing premature failure of the cable. I believe there is meant to be a cable holder on either the steering rack/k-frame to hold the cable in place so that it naturally is guided straight into the bell housing, could be wrong though. If there is no cable holder, use cable ties to help guide it into a natural turn.

Cheers guys! I'll make sure it's guiding through straight and check the other parts you mentioned.

Sounds like I should stock pile some freakin' clutch cables in the boot. At least they don't take long to change over

Update:

I've checked the feed and I've had my mechanic check the feed of the cable and nothing is visibly wrong.

Next time I might get a genuine Ford clutch cable and see if there's a difference in life.

Time to check the Gearbox / Clutch plate now me thinks.
