Hey guys,
I was wondering if any of you have had a Toyota 5 speed (W57, W58 series/supra) gearbox behind a v8 and had it let go (crap itself). If so which box (W56, 57, 58, 59, R154) and how many hp and ft pd of torque? Also if you know which part of the box failed that would be awesome as well. Cheers. |

I've smashed a couple of w57's and w58's, they are not that strong. Go a r154, they are more expensive, but they handle 1000hp supras no worries.

Thanks guys. I've seen that website before krytox, and established that the W57 is only used in a 190hp application from factory compared to the w57's 230hp application. Reason I ask is I have a box lying around from an 83 celica and am looing for something to put behind my early 90's 351 windsor.
I'm trying to make my mind up if I'm going to twin turbo it on straight gas or leave it NA. I was hoping I could find out the weak point in the w57 and beef it up. I was already planning on putting new heavy duty bearings in it and replacing the sandwich plates with steel units. I was looking for an R154 or V160 (dreaming) but the price and condition f most units I've found has put me off thus far. |

W57 is written at 190hp.
They are far over engineered. These things handle power very well. I'd say its more towards the 230 like its steel brother. I gave my 308 hell with one and it never batted an eyelid. but that doesn't say much... I never killed the M21 in it either! but it did rebuild it 2 times! maybe that's why... at a slight noise id re-kit it after all it was only $70 for a kit!

I know this might sound a bit dumb but can these actually fit easily behind our I6's? I'm going down the manual route later on and looking at options for the trans, engine is going to be rebuilt with few extras, better pistons bit of head work cam etc.

All that is required is a new bellhousing, mount and tailshaft. Then assuming the gear lever lines up it should be ok. There have been people who have done it before.

Yeah my understanding of the W57/58 is that they are over engineered and can take some pain. EBS_4L has a supra box behind his motor, but is using the more expensive and bulkier R154 I believe. These were put behind the turbo 1987-92 7M-GTE I think??? Max stock hp used infront of this box was a claimed 260hp.
I have got a quote from Dellow for a cast alloy bellhousing to fit the W57 to my windsor. For just the bellhousing (not FULL KIT) they charge $425+GST. They will have a similar product to connect any of the toyota box range to the 4L I6. You just have to specify which box you want to mate to which engine. I might be sorry, but I think I'm going to stick with my original plan and build up the W57 tougher and use that. Seeing as I purchased the box plus yoke etc for a meer $100, plus $425 for the bellhousing, it's still not big bucks if it lets go. I'm only aiming for some pretty moddest hp for a start anyway. Just the lovely note of the 351 windsor will make me more than happy (for a while ). |

You might get a better price from CRS.
I paid $280 for my bell housing, $80 for a clutch plate and 20 for a custom bearing. I'm aware prices have changed, but even so, they were cheaper than dellow's at the time.

Umm, quick search on their new website, not so cheap!!!
BELLHOUSING inc PIVOT POINT, SPIGOT BUSH $587 Total conversion, not including gearbox $2,069. Ouch!! They also charge $1,450 for a SEMI-RECONDITIONED GEARBOX. Might go with Dellow I think. |

That's a gearbox that has been opened, expected and had any seals changed where necessary?
The fully checked and recond box runs around $2k. Um, I've seen these box's new on ebay offered for around $800 starting price. I think I can't loose, $100 box with several hundred setup = 351 5 speed and me driving with as much caution as I can manage. If it dies, I'll throw some money at an R154. |
