I know this has been asked a heap and I tried the search, but everyone's situation where it happens seems to be different to mine.
I just had the two front shocks changed yesterday due to them not passing rego (and knocking a fair bit), but this morning when i drove it to work it still had a slight knock coming from the front left. It was nowhere near as bad as before, but it's still there. The car handles fine and alignment appears completely fine. Straightest driving car i've ever driven. What does the problem sound like to you guys, and how urgently should i look into it?

Tighten the shock mounts a bit.

Shouldn't the mechanics have done that yesterday? You'd think they would've noticed after taking it for a test drive after installing them. Do i just do 'em up as tight as possible?

basically yes. Bolts/bushes and stuff can move after you go for a drive though.

If you decide to check the shock bushs, when tightened correctly the top bush should have a slight bulge compared to untightened. The lower strut bush is located in the lower arm, the bolt is meant to be fully tight, but even if it's not it shouldn't in itself cause a knock if the bush is good.
The knock could be in the radius rod bush area, or in the steering, or in the lower arm bushs, or in the ball joints, or even somewhere else.

check the springs as they may have distorted due to shocks

Is often the Shock hitting the control arm under load. (ok, I dont think its called the control arm, but im tired, and I cant think). There are a couple of bushes there that wear. Its happened to me heaps. Also happens when a shock is installed the wrong way around sometimes. (180 degrees out, some brands only).
Im going to make sure my creaks etc all go away - I'll be replacing all things rubber with new things superpro when I do mine. |
