I own a El falcon wagon and live out near maitland NSW... there is a heap of dirt roads out here that i use alot. Sometimes the roads get a fair bit tricky with some ruts here and there and a few causway crossings.
Is there a way to raise the suspension maybe atleast 2inches front and rear. I know i can get a fair bit out of the rear by putting the leafs over the axle or just getting 2inch extended shackles.... please post if you know how to lift the front and rear... Cheers. If we get enough hight we might have to put some Muddies on and show up some of these 4WDrivers through the mud lol... |

I worked at a Ford dealership ( as a mechanic ), and when the Dalgety mob bought cars ( to do with cattle & crops type stuff ), they had them lifted and all the underneath protection stuff fitted too. We did all that in the predelivery.
Engine sump guards, transmission guards, fuel tank guards, bullbars ( genuine Ford ones ), Spot lights, Shu-roo's, cruise control, mud flaps, head light protectors, raised springs and heavy duty shocks ( genuine Ford grey ones ), rust, upholstery & paint protection.....etc..... They were all sedans. no wagons...ED,EF & ELs.....back then. I even have a tranny protector here I'm not using.....for an auto tranny....ED model. It's made from 3mm steel plate.

Aww yeh sweet as mate....I heard that if ya really that keen u can turn the falcons into 4WD ... not sure how the hell you would do that unless you live axle the front... though it would be an awsome touring car tho... running a transfer case with the selector would be an easy mod as my wagon is a columnshift auto so the range select can be easily fitted in were the drive tunnel is...
Also since you are a qualified mechanic.... My wagon seams to die off at about 35 to 40kms in first then sundenly kick in and accelorate im not sure if its the stepper motor thts the problem or that there is a leak in the manifold someware.... I took the stepper out yesterday and cleaned it with some brake cleaner and it seemed to do abit of justice... Got any tips or tricks... this wag is also dual fuel.... Cheers buddy... |

I hate dual fuel.....its either one, not both.......Have a look at the size of the hole in the mixer...!!!!...and how big the butterfly is.......its antiquated.....LPG injection is the go....damn expensive too.
How many K's this thing done???? Dizzy & coil been done???...got the right plugs in it???...Are the HT leads any good??? ISC valve only controls idle speed. Does it play up petrol or LPG, or both???

Hey mate i agree i hate GAS fullstop.... I bought the thing in melbourne with the gas system installed previously by the other owners.. however it was never certified. Once i tried to get NSW plates swaped from Victorian plates i had to have the gas certified which i did so this yr in January, i never used the gas system until maybe one month ago and it never worked properly at all.... When on gas and your accelerating its okay until you take you foot off the accerator to stop or go around a bend the Revs will drop down to 100RPM then flick back to 800RPM and if you accelerate after that it will back fire through the manifold as the gas is injected into the air manifold....
I found that the sutherland shire LPG specialists did a very poor job on certifying the gas system as i looked at it myself the other day to find the wiring in the engine bay was wired with the old strip and twist technique and cover the bodgie joins with electrical tape, So being a home grown electrician learning of my old man i re-wired it with new Automotive wire, Solderd and heat shrunk the joins. This did not fix the problem anyhow... So next step... I know F-all about LPG systems but i rand a mechanic and just asked him if there is a way to booste more gas into the manifold and he said yeh if its running lean which i thought might be the case ... So i backed off the gas valve screw between the pump and the manifold. this still didnt fix the backfiring..... Im about ready to ditch the whole LPG system ay... Just don't trust the damn stuff. Do you think this is a wise move.... since i've had the wagon i have redone, the transmission put in a second hand one with 3 yrs warrenty. new welsh plugs, timing been redone, and thats about it. when its on Petrol the Wag is fine yet abit sluggish on take of. probably should replace the leads and spark plugs just incase. and also replace the accelorator cable as it looks to be abit worn out. Could it be possible the ECU is playing up with the fuel ajustments atc... |

Sorry i forgot about the KMS... its done 217,000KMS so they say lol....
Just out of curiosity do you know anyone out there who has bored the 4.0 straight 6 out to a bigger capacity... |

I don't believe in boring engines right out....You don't know if it got " Core Shift " when it got cast.
Then you goto worry about the bores bulging out....lose compression, and the rings just hoe into the ring grooves from excessive pumping motion. The best way to raise compression is through pistons ( made for doing that ).....then cylinder heads ( smaller chambers ),........then shaving the head. What is it you want to do with this engine????

My aim is to get as much horse power out of it with out adding superchargers or Turbo's..
But then again a V8 wouldn't go a stray either.... Is there any simple V8 engines that can go inplace with out having to do to much to it.. |

I'm in the middle of building a N/A I6...4.0....Custom grind Crow billet, adjustable timing chain set, HV oil pump, ported & polished head, AUII rods, BA LPG pistons, full balance....list goes on....been at it for a while...years....LOL. Its all goin in this.......

yeh i wish i could go out and buy me a nice V8 Wagon with the whole benchseat and column shift lol.... They just dont have em....
I was wondering if your any good at fabrication or using a lathe because i was thinking to make some strut spacers out of billit allow for the front suspension of the wag so that way i can get more lift out of the front end with bigger springs... do you think that would work... The Project your on sounds sweet man... Wish i had the money to much around with engines lol... You wouldnt get me out of the garage.... |

That may work, the spacers thing.....some blokes I new years ago did the same thing with a Brumby, and a Toyota Tercel.
You would have to put longer studs in the strut tops, and possibly upgrade them to a 12mm stud, instead of the 10mm ones.....which means drilling out the original holes on the inner guards. I reckon I could make those........hhmmmmmm.

Yeh definatly 12mm studs for extra strength... I wouldnt stinge on them being that the suspension gets the most workout lol....
Do you think 30mm or 50mm Spacer.. And how much would you charge to do that if your willing to make them. Yeh alot of fourby companies like snake racing, Ironman, etc make strut spacers for offroad vehicals but they charge the earth and they dont make em for the Falcon lol.... For the rear suspension there should be no dramas as i can just get extended shackls for the leafs. Im hoping ill get at least 2inch or more lift out of the thing lol.... Btw what extractors would you go for on a falcon like this.... Everyone says Pacemakers but i think thats because thy are the most known.... Does Genie still make extractors....My old mans Jackaroo has got genie extractors and they seem to do a good job... definatly increased the power too. |

Well......I had a look at the Snake racing site.....spacers to suit a Prado...closest to the idea of the front for a Falcon.....I could'nt make them for $180 ( Toyota Prado ones ).
They make them/ get them made for them, on a CNC machine, that would spit them out in about 5 minutes for each. I'd be doing it the old way, in a Lathe......I charge $50 hr.....half the price of machine shops...but I make stuff that you can't buy. They would be made in such a way that they don't just rely on the bolts for positive location, I would machine it a locating spigot too. With the rear, make some more mounting points for the rear spring front eyes.....lower them down a bit, will have a lot more gain than having long shackles ( not safe ). As for headers, I have Pacies, 4480's, they do what I want. There pics of my car in The Garage....under "New ED project"...cjh.....
