Has anyone changed gear sets in their t5? I'm buying a manual conversion soon and seeing as I'm putting a rebuild kit through it was thinking of changing to the gear set out of a mustang while I'm at it (3.35 first, 0.68 fifth and higher torque rating - more getting it for the ratios though).
Mainly concerned with whether I can use the i6's input shaft with it. Cheers

The stock t5 gears sets are not the weak link in the box. The real weak link is third gear but only because it is on the end of the shaft. The second gear syncors go due to over selecting the gear which is fixed by installing a QUALITY short shifter with gear selection stops on it.
Changing for the sake of ratio changes, well if you want to do that it will inprove the acceleration but it is a bit easier to change the diff ratios to suit the box ratios. If you want to strengthen the t5 so you can thrash the hell out of it take a look at the link below. G force make gear sets synchronized, dog ring straight cut and hellical cut dog ring. There full kits come with stronger input shafts so the box will basicly be a TKO 500/600 if you use these parts along with hi quality bearings etc. Not cheap deffinately worth it though I have a Balanced and blue printed Mall Wood t5 in my car and it is sweet as, feels like a totaly different box compared to the stock one. It still has the same gears and shafts in it it is just built properly. When that goes i would look at a G froce, TKO or a Liberty T5 If you wanted to do anything i would get the gears back cut so that you get a more posative shift and almost totally eliminate the posability of knocking it out of gear by accident. Through a hi quality rebuild kit through it as well as hi quality bearings. htttp://www.gforcetransmissions.com/tran_gt-5.asp

Thanks for the reply. It was the gear ratios I was mostly after as I do a fair bit of flat highway kms so wanted the taller fifth gear and bit shorter lower gears for acceleration. Only intend to spend the couple of hundred I need for a rebuild kit and another couple of hundred maybe on a gear set as it's only for my daily (mild n/a).
Dog boxes with a stronger housing would definately be on the cards if I wanted it for a blown application (in the end though I'm pretty easy on boxes so would probably opt for a standard t56).
