As we all know, when getting decent amounts of power going through the 5.0s, the T5 gearboxes have a tendancy to break. Up until now the only option I've heard people speak of is to get a T56. A great option if you're happy to pay the 8 grand or more.

I was thinking that there must be a cheaper option. There must be someone out there, especially in the US&A, who makes rebuild kits for the T5. With all the development that's gone into the 5.0 Mustangs over the years, there'd have to be something. I did a quick search and found this site - www.gforcetransmissions.com

They say their kits are able to withstand 600hp and 500ft-lb which is a big improvement over stock and would suit many of our applications.

Has anyone used any of these rebuild kits before or know of anyone who has? Does anyone know of any other products available in the form of rebuild kits so those of us who want to upgrade our drivetrain can do so without going the T56 option?

T5's are a strange animal - for some people they hold up very well, others snap them regularly. One of my mates has an EB with a supercharged V8 and the T5 has held up for more than 10 years.

I have always liked the look of the gforce stuff. The only downside is that nobody over here seems to use them. From what I have read you can be reasonably confident it will hold up to whatever you can throw at it.

You can also have your T5 rebuilt as a T5Z - these were fitted behind the xr6t's but it probably wouldnt cost more to go the gfroce.

I have run 300RWHP through a T5 quite sucessfully, and really feel that the T5 cops alot of slack that is undeserved.
Jackie Stewart once said
"The only 2 ways to truly insult a man are

Tell him he is a lousy lover and tell him he cant drive"

I think most T5 problems are from lousy drivers.

Treat them with some respect, keep them cool and with clean oil, and dont smash through the gears, skip gears, hang off the shifter, overshift and dropping the clutch violently and so forth, you will see a good life from them.
I am planning on hanging one off the back of my new stroker, and for the record a T56 is not out of the budget, I just want to see how long the T5 will hold up.

I hear ya Paul... I mean 347stroker.

A lot of people are running 300+rwhp through them and if that's what I was looking at sitting on then I'd stick with it as is. Unfortunately (well... fortunately) my goal will be around 500rwhp and I plan on driving it pretty hard. I'll be trying for the best times I can get on the strip and will be doing track work in it also. I'd rather build it knowing it will handle it rather than be sitting on a timebomb, waiting for it to go bang.

I think the gforce rebuild kit will be going on the list of things to do, especially being so much less than the t56 conversion

Couldn't agree more, a bad driver can kill a T5 behind a stock motor.

this might be of some interest.

I Also believe these guys make better gear sets for them?

Hi,
Try speaking to Mal Wood automotive in Queensland. He will be able to steer you in the right direction. He is a guru of gearboxes and clutches.
He will probably recomend a TKO box for what you are trying to achieve.
But,give him a call and talk to him.You can atleast gain more info by it.
His contact details are:-07 4661 3548 or 07 4667 0548

check out http://www.astroperformance.com, they've got one rated to 650hp.
Check out all the yank mustang forums, you'll get alot more info there, not many cars in Australia running 9s with manuals!
