ea box's didnt have syncros in reverse, its the price to pay for those nice short gears is an occasionaly crunch, i generaly grab 5th then reverse on mine, some times it does crunch a bit if not done right, also reverse seems VERY sensitive if the clutch cable nut spins on its own or somthing.

before you go into reverse, when your come to a complete stop, put it in third gear, and then reverse, something i learned at work with a ea box!!

5th to reverse works better i find, i think the no 5th-reverse lockout was factored into the t5 from the factory as no syncros makes it procedural to engage another gear first lol

Never had the pleasure of driving a EA T5 but if reverse doens't have syncro's then your not going to be able to put it in reverse while moving at all. It will just crunch or not go in. I drive trucks with non syncro box's and I find if you have your foot flat to the floor on the clutch while your trying to select reverse just start dropping the clutch slowly and the gear will select ( it will simply fall in).

I often have trouble with reverse with my 5sp. I just double clutch like what Ford-sxr6 said. Seems to work fine.

One of the reasons it maybe difficult to select reverse may be that the start of the spurs on the reverse gear set is worn/bluntened off.
This occurs from people not letting the g'box stop spinning before selecting reverse. I replaced a few parts in my g'box and it selects reverse fine. I select 1st before putting into reverse, no probs.
