Hi guys. Did a t5 conversion on the au almost a year ago now. Its always had this symptom of throwing a lot of heat into the cabin, and its really getting annoying.
I thought it might have been a dodgey clutch slipping which was generating frictional heat, but Ive had a new one put in by ford, and its still running very very hot while Im driving. If its a warmish day it throws off enough heat to make the coins in my cupholder too hot to pick up. Its not so bad on cold days, but still noticable. I want to know if its a common thing with t5's or is there something fishy?

my t5 gets warm aswell...
first check thats it has the right amount of oil in it... was both shift boots put on when the conversion was done??? there is the one that looks pretty and a rubber one thats screwed to the floor, it kind of seals the outside heat and noise.. |

Im hoping the boots were lined right I had my younger brother do the fiddly stuff while I did the lifting/bolting. The boots are through the aperture for the gear lever yes? The top boot over the short shift I had to "modify" with some cuts to fit over the shift. I cant imagine it stoping the heat that is coming through. The entire length of the surround from dash to the armrest glovebox gets warm. My cds come out of the compartment hot, and thats behind the gearbox. Its wierd.
Its not leaving any oil spots from the box, it was full when I checked it 3 months after installing (due for another check). It runs the castrol transmax z fluid. Ive read that using the fluid rather than gearbox oil will result in higher temps, and possibly burnt bearings. This is a lot of heat though. Do manual cars have any further shielding in the tunnel? Im thinking of maybe shaping up some exhaust manifold covers and sticcking it under the car in the tunnel. The box itself isnt in pristine condition, there is some gearwhine when accelerating (im actually quite fond of it, makes it sound like theres a little supercharger).

as well, i run 3.89 diff gears in the back, so its revving higher on the h/way. In saying that it will also get pretty hot in town.
Is there any additives you can add to keep the temp down?

there are no additives i know of to help keep it cool..
having 3.89 will cause extra heat as everything inside the box is rotating faster than normal.. maybe try some synthetic gear oil and see if it helps.. there will always be more heat from the manual because of the only thing stoping hot air is the rubber boot, where in an auto the shifter plate seals the floor keeping heat out.. i have used a couple of layers of carpet underlay over the rubber shift boot with a small square hole with enough space for the shift to move, this seems to have helped.. |

looks like I might have to get creative and make some extra shielding.
going to do a service on it when i can find the time, under a relentlesss assualt of assignments at the moment. I origionally put the penrite oil in it and it as a bit of a dog, hard to shift, just generally terrible. Its still a t5, and would be right at home on a russian tractor, but the transmax z made it a much better box to drive.

things in my centre console get warm after hard driving on warm days, but most of the time is not really noticable in my case... But there is definitely a warmth given off there somewhere... Unless it travels up into the tunnel from the exhaust (heat rises)? and as Troy said there is no plate like on an auto?

This is the first time I have heard of a T5 generating excessive heat, Ive had a few factory manuals and 2 converted to manual, none of them have generated the kind of heat you guys are taking about, even when the EB was on the road with 3.9's and a spool it never generated excessive heat. thought of looking at a cooler for the box? I have seen them done on commodores using the fill and drain holes on the sie of the box and a small electric pump to move fluid through the system.

did you remove all that rubber and sound deading style s**t from over the transmission tunnel? i left it out and havent put the console back in yet and there a fair bit of heat. then i did the converison on my boss's eb2xr6 and made sure all the insulation rubber deading stuff went back in and its all sweet in his. we're both using transmax Z

I have some metallic items in my centre console and sometimes I've noticed they're warm, but its not a common occurrence...

No not as hot as Grimketel mentions then, ie brand of a 5c coin on your finger tips.

na definitely not that hot... But occasionally keys and that sort of thing are warm... not hot, nowhere near hot, but slightly higher than the temp you'd expect when you pick them up...
As I said though I wouldn't surprise if its the exhaust... After a long drive you get out and you can feel the heat coming out from under the car...

Maybe try some heat wrap on your exhaust from the cat to behind the box, see if that will pull some temp out? DO NOT wrap the cat though.

while mine creates some heat but not hot enough to make things too hot to touch...
what makes mine more noticable is the billet alloy gear shift, steel handle with no rubber insulator and alloy gear knob.. |
