I need to settle an argument with a guy at work, he claims a toploader is a 4 speed box only and that a Tremic T5 isnt.
i guess he is probably right cos he is a mechanic by trade. i figured the T5 was toploader cos it has the selector on top of the box. :?

I think TopLoader was a nick name for that box not a generic name for boxes with the shifter out the top.

BTW, I don't think Top Loader refers to the shifter position but the way the gears are loaded in at build time.

On a Toploader box, the extension housing is cast iron, and the box weighed around 96 lbs. Very heavy.

not all toploaders have the linkage down the side, toploader is the term given cause of the way the mainshaft and gears are loaded into the casing, from the top but yeah the tremec 5 speed is also known as a toploader contrary to what some people will tell you. i have a 4 speed from a ford escort which has the topload plate but has the same shift setup as a single rail,so what is it a single loader? or a top rail?

Top Loader is the generic term for all ford RUG series boxes, like the blue one pictured above, and whilst you are correct is saying boxes that load from the top (unlike from the side/front/rear, GM Muncie etc) every gear head world wide will only ever refer to Fords famous RUG series box as a top loader. The tremec series of 5 speeds TKO etc is a modern day cousin of the top loader, with an OD gear.

i pulled out a toploader and replaced it with a T5 on this blokes car a few weeks ago.

also gave the toploader away coz i got no use for it.. better in the hands of sumone who would use it.

and it was soo heavy :S smashed my hand getting it out. where as the T5 was like lifting a small baby..
