is it true that an ef and au have the same tailshaft, auto that is. i went to macarthurs at narralen and the guy told me that they are the same. so is this true??

i heard from a reliable source of mine, that the au gearboxes are 10mm shorter therefore the au tailshaft would prob be the same??? correct me if i am wrong.

No way, 150kph is only 93mph, I pulled 92 and a 15 flat in the Sprint.
F6 did 106mph and mid 13.
You are gonna be needing probably 105-110ish MPH in an E-Series to pull a 12.
Depending on driveline... thats pretty rough.
But 150kph ain't gonna get you a 12 in an E-Series.

Yup, whoops got my figures wrong. Punched in 105 and mph instead of 150 and kph.

Single tailshaft VS two-piece shafts.
The reason a single shaft will break is called critical speed. The tube turns into a skipping rope at high RPM and makes a hell of a mess. That is why you see shafts that fail on the dyno always break in the exact middle. It is not a HP or Torque or balance issue, purely too high an rpm. Go here http://www.markwilliams.com/driveshafttech.aspx and have a look at the chart.

A two-piece shaft eliminates this problem, as it is supported in the middle, and the tube length is therefore halved. It can also be smaller diameter tube, so you can reduce the rotating mass. A V8 Supercar has a two piece driveshaft, with 2.5" diameter, 0.080" wall thickness. Very light, and very strong. Some holden teams just modify the factory commode shaft, and they work fine.

The cheapest and easiest way to fit a two piece shaft to ANY car that did not come that way is to get one for a VN-on commode, and just change the ends to suit the trans and diff you want to use. The centre mount is very basic and can be fitted to most vehicles very easily.
(Just don't tell anyone you have commode parts on your ford!)
A good tailshaft shop can do this conversion for a very reasonable price. :D
