in the E series the XR versions got an alloy, 3 inch shaft witch seemed to do the job but I'm unsure about the AU.

if you still have the speed limiter working you shouldn't have any problems but a tail shaft loop is good cheap insurance if your worried about it.

The EA's didn't have a speed limiter. I had an 88 EA manual sedan, 186 rwhp, original tail shaft, hits 200kmh, didn't push it any further than that, no vibes from the shaft either.
The Police ECU's in the AU's ( I6 ) were limited to 215 kmh.

My XR8 has a 3" Alloy tailshaft. It's an AU S1

its not so much the tailshaft that fails. its the extension housing of the 4 speed auto that cant take the harmonic vibration from the e series steel tail shaft at high speed.
most people say the shaft fails! but its the 4 speed auto housing that fails, in turn destroying the tailshaft.

im running an ea tailshaft behind a 5 speed with over 200rwkw/280 rwhp and has seen well over 180kmh on the dyno many times..

afaik the au 2 and 3 should have the alloy shaft so there is less chance of failure..
