hey guys, i have noticed with a full car load, the tail shaft of my el wagon is rubbing up on the tunnel. i am going to have the tail shaft out in the near future, as i am doing a T5 conversion, so i was wondering if there was anything i could do to stop this from happening, apart from raise it?
the wagon currently has 3 inch lowering blocks in it, and still looks like a jeep. if i could get away with stopping this without having to lift the car up, it would be great. has anyone experienced this before? or even better, fixed it?

Hi.
I have the same issue with a full load, 2.5" blocks, especially when accelerating in first and second gear. The main reason for this is the lowering blocks. When you are accelerating, the pinion lifts up, and the blocks exaggerate this movement. The best solution will be to remove the blocks and get your leaf springs reset to the ride height you want. You could also have a wedge made up to adjust the pinion angle down a bit. It would be possible for your current blocks to be altered and have them machined with an angle to alter the pinion angle. I have thought about getting under the car with a big hammer and 'creating' some clearance where it rubs. There is a bumb stop that the pinion end of the diff centre hits. You could make this a bit longer, but then it may ride on it all the time. Hope some of my musings help. Cheers BenJ

When I used to make driveshafts, we had a few really low cars that had this problem. Apart from raising the car, which you obviously dont want to do, the other option was what we did. We used a two piece tailshaft from a commonwhore, which the ends changed to suit the ford diff and trans. We had to mount the centre bearing into the floor, but the tailshaft tube is only 2 1/2" diameter, so we gained and inch or so of tunnel clearance. This is a big job, but not too dear if you can source the bits and mod the tunnel/floor your self.

fak that!! lol i reckon the floor in the back would look like a***. hah, i put a few spacers in the pinion bumpstop we will see if this helpd!
hey just outta curiosity are wagon tailshafts the same as sedan?

No, wagon tailshafts are longer, and made of alloy. They also have a larger diameter, which doesn't help.

What about an XH ute shaft? They are steel, and would be close to e-series wagon length.....
Smaller diam than alloy too.

I had the same problem when the car was loaded or should i say overloaded and i have over riders fitted to my springs and they didnt help at all have two nice shiny sections on my tailshaft now, went to replace it while i was at the wreckers the other day but all the tailshafts there had been damaged due to their forklift picking the cars up.
Remember years ago the diffs use to have a big rubber block to avoid this problem the new cars dont have them. Alan |

i ficed this buy buying a few hunks of nolathane and putting them on the diff where the bumpstop hits, the replaced the bumpstop with a urethane one, and put a spacer underneath it that i knocked up at work, had my matress and slepping gear in the back, 2 people on the matress, one in the passenger seat and me driving and it didnt rub once.
