Scary stuff.. makes me think seriously about investing in a tailshaft loop!

Mate that's scary stuff right there.
I guess FoMoCo cares little for its customers after the car is out of warranty. Scary. Certainly makes one think about the consequences of driving even at highway speeds. EDIT: PS... EB or AU?

It can happed just not a offen sat 1 in 20 that the tail shaft or uni brake but I think it would be the front uni or front area of the shaft. A mate of mine has lost his lower left leg from a front uni sh!tting itself in a 6cyl HQ sedan doing 100kmh. He was a passenger, lost his leg when the car flipped forward onto its roof, then sliding down the road, and off to one side down an embankment rolling, and his leg went out the door when the door lock busted. The door almost totally severed it off. Another mate had an LX Hatchback Torana, worked 308, worked Trimatic, Bango LSD diff, had it wound right up, estimated speed was 240kmh, and then vibrated for about 3 seconds, and BANG, the car skipped up at the rear a few times, making more banging noises and came to a stop. He had a chain the was pulled tight and attached to the seat bolts. That chain was touching the ground, the rear of the auto was gone, the whole diff centre was gone, the front seats were leaning inwards as the floor was very out of shape. He wasn't hurt. A bloke I used to work for was racing a 55 Chevy at Mackay dragstrip at a Nostalgic meet. Had a small block V8 with a manual. Had a couple of runs, went good, then on another run while doing a burnout, the flywheel exploded. The pieces of flywheel just tore through the car like bullets at a drum. The firewall was shredded, as was the bonnet, the cowl panel, and the chassis was so hacked up, the car dropped down onto the extractors, the extractors was the only thing holding the car off the ground. I wish I had pics of it. Even the floor was torn to bits, and the guy driving it must have had an Angel lookin after him that day, he didn't get hit with 1 piece, but when you look at the drivers floor, he is very, very lucky to still have his nuts.

Glad your all ok, so its a lowered wagon which is driven alot on poor dirt roads? Also being a wagon its a LWB so the driveshaft is longer than a sedan which may pose a problem with age and driving conditions. Stones, rocks, road conditions, speed, modifications and maybe abuse all contribute to premature component failure. I have driven out to my parents farm a bit and my driveshaft is covered with stone marks and it may take only one large rock to dint the shaft and weaken it, it may have been the reason in your case and with the shaft being longer than a sedan along with being lowered which exposes the shaft to more stones was maybe enough to have it fail.

Well, while the car is on the hoist I'm bolting in a loop. Any tips on positioning or just closer to the gearbox end of things?

i only just git my tailshaft rebalanced, the balancer/dampener at the front of it was screwed and thats what threw it out...
the tailshaft guy said to leave it off as it is not necissary and it was worth $350 from fraud... did i do a bad thing?!

The balancer thing you are refering to is a SYD (slip yoke damper) its there to absorb the torque converter lock up boom (similar to a harmonic balancer). You can leave it off but may get a vibration/hum when the torque converter locks up.
