<takes deep breath....>

I have been trying to find the source of a chain-like rattle that sounds like it is coming from the engine. It does not rattle when sitting stationary, only when it is above around 2000 rpm and driving, and at that point when you are neither accelerating or decelerating (gear backlash point).

I have replaced the timing chain, and also one of the idler pulleys (which seemed to have a bit of noise in it).

The thing is, the tensioner position did not change after the new chain went in (and yes, it was compressed then reset properly), so I don't believe the old chain was worn much at all. The guides still have plenty of meat on them, too.

What makes me think this is NOT an engine issue, is the fact that it is not audible unless you are basically coasting. A timing chain rattle would be apparent regardless of load, would it not?

I have since checked the torque converter bolts and flywheel ring gear - all tight and ok. I did find a bit of slop in the tailshaft to gearbox union, so finally the big question....

How much slop is allowable, and is there a bush inside the housing that might need replacing?

It moves up and down what would appear to be an eccessive amount - around 1.3mm. Although the sound seems to come from the engine area, this would be a likely culprit as it meets the coasting criteria.

Any suggestions??
