Hi all,
I just want to bounce my thinking off on you fine folks... I have some 3-4mm slop in my drivers side front wheel.. It is steering slop not ball joints. Some details. 1. Movement is left to right only not top to bottom. 2. Both Tie rod ends have been replaced. 3. Slop is only on the drivers side.... passengers has none at all. Now if the slop is only on the drivers side... it can't be actual steering box slop or it would be both sides. If it isn't the box, tie rod ends or ball joints.... it must be........... The ball joint on the drivers side of the steering box tie rod... (the ball joint under the rubber boot on the drivers side) My Gregorius manual says they do wear out ... but I've not heard of it before. I've another tie rod here that has no slop and I'm thinking of swapping it out tomorrow... figured I'd ask here for anyone else's experiences first. I'd never head of tie rods themselves wearing.. but this car is lowered (supers) so it probably gets more wear as the tie rods don't sit flat like in a normal un-lowered car. I feel I've eliminated all other possible causes.. and this is all that is left. Is my thinking sound? rgds Frank |

OK.
Being a steering RACK and not a box, it changes some of your assumptions. There are two rack ends to which the tie rod ends are screwed on to. It is entirely possible for one rack end to have slop, and not the other. Another possibility is that you have loose wheel bearings, but that is a fair amount of movement for them. Worth checking though. Cheers BenJ

Get someone to wiggle the wheel for you while you stick your head under there and have a gander. Easiest way to find the slack

Thanks guys...
it's not the wheel bearings... I just replaced them and the disk itself has no slop. I did the wiggle thing and the tie rod is moving.. so guessing either the rack is clagged, or the rod end. BenJ.. know it's a rack mate... called it a box just for familiarities sake.. .(used to known XP's and such.) |

Actually BenJ... I'm not sure that makes any sense mate..
I'm talking about having the wheels straight and off the ground.. don't touch the steering wheel.. grab the drivers side and it jigles a few mm..... passanger doesn't. slop appears to come from the steering box as the tie rod end is moving the tie rod back and forth with the slop. on the drivers side only. There is one sold rack is there not? and at either end of that is a tie rod attached which via tie rod ends connects to the wheels. If the rack had slop.. it would move a couple of mm in either direction meaning both wheels would have slop.... If the problem is only on one side of the rack..... with the steering wheel centered and unmoving.. it has to be the tie rod or it would be both sides. I'll know one way or another shortly as I'll be pulling the rubber boot off and seeing where the slop is... |

I was right and I learned something... always a good combo.. just pulled the boot off... the ball joint at the rack end of the tie rod had the movement in it... it was clagged..... rod was moving, rack wasn't... so off to get some lock washers and all will be good as I have a perfect spare. thanks all rgds Frank |

It's all good mate.
I think we are both talking about the same physical part. "Tie Rod" and "Rack End" I believe are the same thing, just different names. Pleased to here you have it all under control and hopefully it will sorted soon. Cheers BenJ

yup...
swapped the tie rods and fixed the problem... no more slop. which is great because this was a ghia speed sensitive rack in there and I didn't want to put one of my GLI ones in it's place. now just trying to figure out why the high pressure line from the pump is leaking from the bottom of the fitting despite having new O ring and being tightened as much as I could... ever had that issue mr BenJ? driving me nuts as I wanted to get a wheel alignment today. |

bummer... is only a slow drip.. but pissing me off....
and I don't want to have to change the hose because the damn thing is a nightmare to get to the other end of. |

a smear of oil safe silicone over the nut from the o-ring to the hex. or try to find a thicker o-ring, or get a teflon one perhaps off shelf or made up. either way its not fun lol

just had the same in the v8s and went to a hydraulic hose repairer to replace the ford fittings,was told by a mods member.they may have a similar fix for the 6 pump.

thats easy... normal hight has the tie rod almost flat... lowered has it on an angle so would have to wear faster as the angle would change as you turned the wheel.

Is it just me or is speed sensitive steering hard to get used to?
I have absolutely no slop in my steering at all now.... wheels are perfectly aligned and all is good... and I keep over correcting my steering and going from side to side in the lane... didn't happen till I found the loom for the speed sensitive steering and plugged it back in. I know it's working properly.. because I was in a straight line and doing 80 and swerving gently from side to side while slowing.. I noticed somewhere between 30 and 10 kph it got much easier to steer.. but it's hard to get used to...... am I the only one with that issue? rgds Frank |
