On the weekend when going to Kings Park, I had to punch it to get into a gap as the traffic was pretty full on. With the camber of the road and turning right, my right wheel just spun as I got into my lane and I had F-all acceleration which caused some embarrassment. As far as I know, my series 1 EL XR8 should have LSD, but I get the feeling it's cactus.
I've looked around to see if I can find out what the stock ratio is. Does 3.23 sound about right? Otherwise, can someone correct me? Next thing, rebuilding it. When doing so, I want to change the ratio but am not sure what is a good balance. I do a fair bit of driving in the country, but want to give the 1/4 mile time a bit of a boost. Any recommendations??? Finally, I'd like to hear of anything good anyone has to say about a workshop in Perth I could get the work done. Thanks, Chad

With regards to the diff ratio, there should be a metal tag hanging off one of the diff cover bolts with the number of the ratio.
If yours is a manual then 3:45 ratio is about as high as you'd want it if your worried about highway revs. With 3:7 diff its perfect for the manual but you'll be doing around 2400rpm @100km/h. If its auto then i'd fit 3:7's to keep a balance between highway driving and accelaration. But 4.11's are ideal behind an auto... again around 2400rpm @100km/h |

Hey mate
Your XR8 should have a 3.45 ratio diff. They came factory with this ratio and LSD. You could try changing the diff oil to a thicker one which might help your LSD come back to life. Otherwise be prepared to spend some $$ rebuilding your diff with different gears (alot of places wont touch 2nd hand a*** so you'll have to pay for new ones)

Depends on gearbox and whether its series 2. If its auto, 3.45 regardless of series. If its manual, series I is 3.23, series II is 3.45.

3.7's won't rev that high on the freeway.
They'll sit on just under 2,300rpm in a manual. 4.11's in a manual on sat on 2,500rpm. 3.45's will do bugger all for a quarter mile time, and also you wont really notice anything on the hwy either. 3.7's are about a perfect mix for a manual. But god luck finding some 3.7 gears... They're as rare as hens teeth, or cost a fortune brand new... |

Mine does 2450rpm with 3.7 diff but thats with an EA box and im not sure how much the V8's differ in rpm's edited spelling... Yeah thats fair enough, the non EA T5's for the 6's and 8's are the same, except the 6's have a shorter first gear.
I think the EA T5's have a shorter 5th ratio too, better box for acceleration, cause the first few ratio's are short as. |

so if i went for a t5 conversion and 3.45:1 lsd how much better would it take off over the auto with the 3.08:1 open diff? I would hope (think) that it would be amazingly faster...

It would s**t all over an auto with a 3.08.
A manual with a 3.08 would be a bit quicker than the sludgebox auto's in the falcons. I'd say you'd knock a good .5-1 second off a quarter mile time. |

Mine is series 1, manual. So, I did read the right figure when it said 3.23.
I think I'll have to get hold of some 3.7s. Where do I look for the new gears? How expensive are they new? Would I see a noticable difference in times down the 1/4?

3.7's will probably save you a few tenths down the quarter. It depends on whether you change into 4th now, or keep it in 3rd. Cause if you get 3.7's you'll have to change to 4th before the line.
You will notice a fair bit of difference on the street though. In gear acceleration will be heaps better and, you'll get off the line better (is a little trickier sometimes though, cause the car will want to light up the rear tyres a bit easier). |

I do change to 4th already, it dies at just over 4000 in 3rd...
