Gday,
Im looking for a Toploader for my XB. Iv been doing the maths trying to work out a diff ratio thats going to give ok revs at 110. I have heard that there were 3 main Toploader configurations Wide Ratio: 2.78 1st, 1.93 2nd, 1.36 3rd, 1.00 4th, and 2.78 Rev. Close Ratio: 2.32 1st, 1.69 2nd, 1.29 3rd, 1.00 4th, and 2.32 Rev. Overdrive Ratio: 3.29 1st, 1.84 2nd, 1.00 3rd, .81 4th, and 3.29 Rev. Just wondering if theres an easy way to tell the boxes apart without opening them up and counting teeth? Im thinking of getting an overdrive version if I can and using a 3.7 diff to get about 110 at 2800 on 24" tyres in top. (Tyre DIA in inches * revs div 1000 * 3) div (gearbox ratio * diff ratio) = MPH MPH * 1.81 = KPH Does anyone know where I could get hold of one of these boxes, or would I be better off just getting a normal 1.00 top ratio one and use a lower ratio diff? Thanks

I think you will find the overdrive version you are referring to is actually the SROD gearbox from early Fox mustangs. I have never heard of an overdrive loader from factory.

There is a toploader overdrive box used for truck and some full sized US cars - most of the US performance people recommend you don't use it as the ratios suck
I have a close ratio box in my 4V cammed Clevo. I would not recommend it for street use as it takes too many revs to get it rolling If you want good performance go with TKO or T3553 and 3.9:1 rear

No worries. Thanks for that.
How is the TKO or T3553 for strength, better or worse than the Toploader? and do they bolt up to a toploader bellhousing or will I need a custom?

Should be OK - they were recommended by Mal Wood for use behind my Clevo - which probably makes arounf 400hp
Not sure if they bolt up. Give Mal a call on +61 7 4661 3548 or email malwood@bigpond.net.au

EBXR8380 has 440kw at the rear treads (around 590hp@ the rear), you won't have a problem with this transmission. As for bell housing contact Mal Wood, he should be able to advise what fits and what is the best combination for you. http://www.malwoodauto.com.au/
