I bought an EF recently thinking it didnt drive at all because the trans was dead. It turns out it drives fine but the transmission (I think) does weird things. Its a 4 speed auto.
Sometimes the car will stall when going really slow coming to a stop. When cruising along the rpm's will rise and fall a few hundred rpm like the convertor is slipping or locking and unlocking. It will change to 4th or so it seems when doing less than 15-20kms/hr which makes the car struggle. If I downchange it will be fine. Also the speedo seems notchy when accelerating hard. It will skip up through the km markings. Am I up for a new convertor? Is it the transducer? Is it worse than that? The fluid level is fine. Thanks for any help. Dan |

Dan,
The notchy speedo could indicate the problem. Try checking the speedo sender unit, connections and wires, from the left hand side of the box to the sender [and gear] on the drivers side. I mean visually inspect it all, you may have to lower the gearbox to access the sender [I had to]. I had to remove the outer [red] insulation from the three wires and found them to be cracked from vibration. After BenJ soldered them for me it was fine. Speedo was smooth again as were the gear changes and still going strong. A worn gear could give incorrect readings but I'd check the wires and joins first. Paul

I replaced the speedo sender today. It fixed the notchiness but the revs still wont stay consistent and it feels like it is locking up and unlocking when cruising along.
Could it be the converter or something else? |

Dan,
It's a tough call without driving it and there is a large section on road testing the box in my Ellery's w/shop manual, I assume there'd be one others. Otherwise I'm only guessing and not much help to you. It could be the converter clutch but it could also something else eg incorrect fluid type, or a sensor etc. I know you said the fluid levels fine, but did you put the 95le in yourself? You might want to reset the ECU and see what happens to the engine revs as that could be confusing the gearbox not the other way round. Failing that helping you may have to get it checked by an experienced road tester ie gearbox guy or trusted mechanic as 'feeling' the problem would help identify it. Paul
