Hi All,
Just after a trans cooler for my EL. It has a 3000rpm converter, so a decent cooler is required. Is something like this big enough? http://cgi.ebay.com.au/AUTOMATIC-TRANSM ... 286.c0.m14 Core size is 280MM X 300MM X 19MM I've used the PWR V8 sized ones a few times, but never with a bigger converter, so just wasn't sure if it'd be big enough. The Ford accessory one is available and I believe they are fairly good. Part number is EF 7A095 K1T
and costs $174.00 at your local Ford dealer. |

Just wasn't sure if one of them would be big enough with a stally. |

If your still running the cooler built in to the radiator then that in conjunction with the 6 cyl external cooler should be large enough. If your worried get the 8 cylinder or the largest one instead. |

Private 9, id say that one would be fine. Going by the dimensions it would seem to be about the size of most of the V8 sized ones e.g. the davies craig V8 one is around the same size, actually a fraction smaller.
Are you planning on running the cooler through the radiator or are you going to bypass it altogether? |

Out of curiosity, people keep asking if he is going to continue running it through to radiator?
What would be the advantage of this? Isn't half the point keeping it seperate so it doesn't mix with the coolant?

Advantage would be trans fluid gets to operating temp quicker due to the extra heat from the radiator. It also would provide extra cooling i suppose as it passes from the built in cooler to the external cooler where fitted. Disadvantage is there is the possibility of fluid mixing if the radiator s**t itself..
Bypassing the radiator will mean that the trans fluid will take a bit longer to get to normal operating temp from a cold start since its running stand-alone. Running the trans fluid at too low a temp can be bad for the trans. Upside is that there is no way of fluid mixing and the trans temps will always be cool. |

Isn't half the point keeping it seperate so it doesn't mix with the coolant? Personally, I highly recommend running it through the radiator. Having the oil too cold will cause damage as well. Running it through the radiator helps make sure it doesn't get too cold. Best way to set it up is from tranny to external cooler, then external cooler to radiator (to heat the oil back up a bit if need be before it goes back to the trans. Also, it's best to have the oil enter the cooler from the top connection and leave from the bottom. Reason for this is that if you ever run low on fluid it will continue to circulate back to the tranny. I remember with the BA radiators theres been some issue about the radiator failing and coolant mixing with the auto tranny fluid. But I don't think this has been such an issue for earlier models. |

Thanks, Justin. that ebay one is about $100 over priced. you can pick up the same cooler from most auto places for under $100. i'd be leaving all the tube style ones on the shelf anyway. they are good for having little pressure drop, but for a trans cooler that is of little concern. grab your self a stacked plate type one like the ones from B&M |
