 Post subject: Trans cooler, to connect through radiator or not?

I recently had my AU fitted with a trans cooler. Does anyone know for sure if it is better to connect through the radiator or not?

The cooler is fitted in front of the radiator. I want to know if its better to keep the trans fluid going through the radiator as well as the cooler or to run it through the cooler alone.

I have always been under the impression that you should run it through both the radiator and the cooler.

I am pretty sure you should run the fluid through the radiator first then the cooler. The radiator will remove the initial heat then the cooler can do a better job.

Dunno how true it is though.

not through the actual radiator, through the tank at the end that is for running the trans fluid through to cool it.

yes of cause it would be bad if you did that, very very bad.

Thanks mattronics , Ive been told both ways are better so trying to find out if some knows for sure or has proof or a qualified opinon.

That is fair, somebody that is qualified should know the exact reasons for doing it either way.

I am only going on what I was told when I had a transcooler fitted to an EF company car that I had. I asked at a few different trans and radiator places and what I told you seemed to be the general consensus then.

Thanks mattronics , my mate who owns a big radiator shop said "dont put it through the radiator." my mechanic who is very good has put it through so I dont know what to do. :roll:

you think the temp of your engine is less than the oil temp .. I don't. If you have a decent sized trans cooler in front of your radiator I would leave it going through that, and that alone!!!

I am fairly sure that the temp of the radiator is cooler than the trans fluid temp. If it was hotter then the trans fluid up I don't think that pretty much all car manufacturers would set up their auto trans standard to be cooled like that.

I guess you could try removing the oil cooler lines from your trans and link them together, then drive it that way and tell us all how long the trans lasts for, or possibly the heat it gets to diving in normal traffic.

On my car it goes through both.

I think that two sources removing heat has to be better than only one.

I only fitted up a nice new big mutha one a few weeks back and as I though and as the instructions that came with it said was,
To find the direction of flow and fit the cooler after the radiator trans cooler as 'mattronics' quoted..

I just had my trans serviced and the guy there said mine was going through both the trans cooler and radiator and that i should buy a biger trans cooler and only use that "dont put it through the radiator."

He showed my why .... the pipe inside the radiator gets worn in time and a whole heap brass s**t ends up in your trans
