was just on the phone to the guy from the auto trans shop.
asked him about an external trans cooler for an ef .he said they restrict flow and arn't worth putting in.think he said to make sure the lines to the radiator are nice and dandy and thats enough (even with engine work) to keep the trans cool. what do u reakon?

they are used if you do a lot of towing... do you? If not then I wouldn't bother!

I would most definately recommend one..
They prolong your transmissions life, and especially if you give it a good booting all the time i would say go get one yes

your trans guy is full of s**t
most aftermarket coolers have the same diam pipes as the tranny coolign lines to teh rad so they wont restrict flow the cooler the tranny runs the better it will be and the longer it will last go get one serious

as with all mechanical devices they all have proper operating temps. the bonus of having an external cooler is that it has a more constant temp and isn't influenced by the radiator.
cooler isn't always better, materials inside a transmission has certain clearances at cold that is taken up when at proper operating temp, hense hard shifts when cold and smoother when warm.

But for the average formodder who has the 'go faster' bits and uses there cars for day to day driving AND as a toy I would see alot of sense in a trans cooler to maintain that normal operating temp.

that is true, but to say cooler is always better is abit general (not having a go at anyone), not everyone is a hoon and straps their car.

My Fairmont has a tranny cooler factory fitted, and if anyone would know whether or not they are a good idea you'd think that would be Ford wouldn't you ????
My oil line comes out of the tranny, into the radiator, out of the radiator, into the cooler, back to the tranny. I am guessing they do it that way so the tranny gets up to temp quickly, like the engine. Thats just a guess, no facts to support it.

Hey concorde - are you able to find out much about the EF towpacks at your work? Were they a 3rd party bar? As i have a rather large hayman-reese on the back of mine, just wondering if this was the Ford haevy duty towpack... Cheers

if its the box style tow bar it is the heavy duty. if you want a heavy duty you are better going aftermarket on the older cars.

Ok I'll be a bit general then A TRANNY COOLER IS AWAYS BETTER You don't need to be a hoon, you don't need to be towing. The only reason their not fitted as standard is costs! If you want to look after you transmission you will have one fitted. Stops oil burning, improves shifts less maintenance. For a small cost, they are well worth it.
