Hi I have a 98 Factory Dual fuel Au forte series 1 V8 ( 5L ), have not long got it on the road as only end of 2012.. Anyway the transmission goes into limp mode once the trans gets 2 hot , and of course stays in 3rd till cooled back down. The transmission seems great apart from that it doesn't slip or anything perfectly smooth gear changes up until this occurs. I have put another cooler just above the original 1 so its now running 2, have serviced the trans new filter oil as specified in Hand book, I was wondering if maybe its electrical but I'm not sure , If any1 has any suggestions would love to hear them....
Cheers Karen

The best thing I can think of is to get it diagnosed or by doing the diagnostic yourself. Use the smartlock light. (I think au's had smart lock?) just search on here for au diognistic hopefully something will come up

Sounds like a faulty Trans Temp sensor. Probe pins 37 and 91 of the EEC and measure the voltage with the key on.

:) Thanks everyone for suggestions, no the transmission light doesn't come on, engine doesn't run hot at all , don't think I've seen that go over the letter O in the word Normal on temp gauge. I will check into possibility's and hopefully something comes up.
I also noticed that when trans locks in limp mode , accelerator feels firmer under foot as if it was sticking slightly, but when trans isn't locking down accelerator is really light to use ..... thought I would mention it, just incase..

I had a similar problem with my EL fairmont and it turned out to be one of the solenoids in the trans.

S5 solenoid. I have that exact problem in my i6 el fairmont now. Recond solenoids are around $100 I think new around $250.

Also flushing the cooling system out/making sure the radiator isn't obstructed will help slightly, I put a new radiator in mine after it had a leak, helped a bit, didn't cure it though. Also does your catalytic converter have a heat shield on it? On the 6 cyls it is right next to the trans, all the radiant heat coming off them couldn't be too good for the trans.

It's probably percpetion....The pedal probably just feels firmer because it's locked in 3rd.
Buckets; I'd like to know how they "recondition a solenoid"?

im having the same problem with my ef xr8 ex pursuit. its always stuck in limp mode and then sometimes it gives 1st 2nd 3rd but no drive the car does not over heat and then just the other day it will take off in limp mode and about 20 seconds later i have no gears at all. im starting to pull my hair out. i did get a scan done on it and it comes up saying that the temp in the gearbox is over heating. and saying my fans arnt working i was thinking it was computer. mine is also dual fuel but not for long taking gas off it. if i had to i was going to replace gearbox computer trans computer inhiberter switch. all i want to do is take it for a spin and i cant. and when i was reving the other day it was making a real wierd whinding noise

Oil level ok in auto trans ?, no coolant and auto trans fluid mixing in the coolant header tank (radiator failure) ?, Battery is good ?, no loose terminals or bad earths ?, no water in connectors ?, heaps of things to look at, but i suspect one of two things, the gearbox could be playing up or as per those codes temp sensor in the gearbox could be putting it into limp home mode, the temp sensor is part of the gearbox wiring internally of the trans, it will cut the cooling fans into full cycle as it thinks it could be overheating. Only looking at what you have said, may be wrong though ...

Just a quick up date , Transmission still going into limp mode. We have put an extra intercooler just above the original 1, so should be now getting cooled , but hasn't made any difference. :x , also dropped the oil put fresh oil & new filter in on the same day as extra intercooler. :?
I'm defin thinking along the lines of a sensor :| so will check our way through them , see what comes of it.. will update posts with any and all news good  or bad

did you put extra oil in for the increased capacity the cooler provides?

I dodn't read anything else, too long, give us an update that is short and concise.
CBF reading too much tonight.
