Hi guys,
I'm new to fordmods, have been watching for a while though and have learned a lot.I want to get some thoughts on auto transmission flushing. Firstly,is it best to drop the pan before or after flushing (or both). If done first dirty oil coming though the valve blocks, etc would polute the new oil you just put in and possibly clog the new filter. If done last then you wouldn't be flushing with clean oil for a long while. Therefore I am thinking to drop the pan and clean it and fit it again with old filter and gasket, top up the oil, flush the box the drop the pan again and fit new filter and gasket and top up again.I reckon this would be about 17 ltrs(expensive). The car (EL ghia) has done 150k and I don't know the history-do you think this is overkill? Also, wouldn't a bettter flush point be at the return fitting to the box as it will then fully flush the line and cooler/s.Does anyone know where to get trans oil at good prices? Any thoughts are welcome Thanks in advance |

Take the pan off, dump the oil. Put it back on and top up with new fluid. Drive car a bit, come back. Dump and do the same thing about three times or until it's clearing up. Then whack the new filter in and then you're done. Yes, it is time consuming but at least you'll know it'll be done right. Other alternative is to pay someone.

Your way would work, but would dilute new oil with old each time. It's hard to say how many times you would have to drop the pan to get it totally clear.I guess that both methods would be pretty time consuming, however that doesn't matter as what I really want is to get all the old oil out.

Yes it does mix old and new, as most of it is in the torque convertor but unless you have a pump then there is no real other way. You keep doing it till it turns red again. Then do it every 10,000kms or so. That all depends on how pedantic you are. When you do any other oil, there still always old oil there.

This is how I do it.
The top auto cooler fitting on the radiator, undo it, hook up an old fitting with a hose on it ( into the radiator, NOT the pipe), put that in to a 5lt bottle. With trans in park, and the vehicle on stands and close to level, start engine and watch the oil pump out. When you see bubbles, stop the engine. Then reconnect the cooler pipe. Refill the trans, either through dip stick tube or filler bung, then start engine, run through the gears ( all of them several times ) for about 3 to 4 mins. Repeat this process about 4 times, then remove the pan, change filter & gasket, refill, run through the gears, the recheck and top up to level. You will use anywhere from 15 to 20lt to do this. When doing it this way, it flushes the convertor too as well as the servo's & clutch packs etc, etc...

Can the trans be flushed out with anything other than trans fluid?
I ask as I need to do a full flush on my ED trans just to see if it works OK once the fluid is shiny new. There is no way I want to spend $200+ on fluid only to find the trans is stuffed. Cheers Bruce
