Hi guys, having a very bad week.The auto in my EL has s**t itself and I have been quoted $1760 for rebuild, does that price sound ok, sounds expensive to me..Would have liked to go manual conversion but need the car asap and dont have time to find parts.

yeh thats good, i needed a new rebuilt tranny in the VS cost me $2200
my tranny on my au will have to go sometime soon, with all the neutral to drive shoves off the line with the shiftkit... soon as it does, its all manual for me...

wow....now i want to learn how to pull apart a transmission so i can fix the tranny myself....
is it hard to learn how to pull it apart (easy part) and put it back together?

You'd be better off buying four boxes from a wrecker and trying your luck! I found a smooth one from Pick-a-Part that cost me $180..... But then I ditched it for a T5.

Assuming this is for a 4.0L, a good T5 conversion would be half the price to rebuild the auto. A good second hand auto would be half that again. Any wrecker could get you one pretty quickly, so make a few calls & shop around.

Yeah if u can wait like a Week the manual would be the way 2 go, when they rebuild the auto do they just rebuild it to stock again or do they toughen it up a tad??

rebuild to stock and those prices are a bit rich. in Sydeny you can get a reco box for $1100 to $1300, plenty of Taxi's round here thats why..
BUT Go the T5 conversion.. it will price up ½ way between your current quote and the Sydney prices,

i have a 3speed auto sitting in my EA.....which is being wrecked...should i keep it and muck around with it to see whats inside so i can slowly learn? or should i just leave it all together. Phongus,attack it as the 4 speed is a much better option. Contact Brett 4777 about autos-he does them every day for work.

For my EL I was quoted a bit under $3000 (installed) so got one from wrecker then had to have the T5 solonoid replaced after 4 mths (about 3 Km's). Have replaced again and have had a transmission coller fitted

jesus. you can get a replacement tranny for like 300 bucks and bolt it up lol. f**k the reco.

The chances of getting a low km box is slim and a secondhand box might sh*t it'self in a couple of months anyway.
I have just gone thru this dielema and talking to my auto guy the arquement for a recon box made the most sense. The 4 speed has a poor track record. |

THE 4 speed has a life of 150000 - 200000K's.
