hello everyone i am new on this i just want to ask a question i am pretty confuse . my car is na ford ltd 1988 model 3.9 transmission is 3 speed auto no overdrive on my car now but had no reseved ! i was thinking about change transmission to 4 speed auto with over drive .but i was told wont fit cos my car dont have overdrive button and wire ? i went to see my meacical he said wont fit cos of overdrive and wire loops ! then i went to see other fews mechical they said is will fit on my car some said wont fit could anyone help with this pls pls pls pls need HELP many thank

The diff ratio in your car will be a 2.77:1......and the 4sp auto ones were either 3.08:1 or 3.23/3.27:1. You'll need the wiring harness and the little auto ECU for it.
The only benifit with fitting the 4sp auto would be better take off, as the 3sp &4sp auto's have the same 1st gear ratio...about 2.39:1 .

thank for reply cjh need to ask you question where is wiring harness in motor or in dash board or what is the little auto ECU for it?. sound like a massive big job to fix it ? do i need to change diff ratio too ? thank again

Hey mate, the V8's weren't an option on the NA's, and only the V8's have a transmission computer. The 6 cylinders are controlled by the ECU, so you'll need a new one.
Any automatic multi-point EFI ECU from an EBII to ED, maybe EBI, not 100% sure. Or you could get an EL ECU, I've been told they have impoved shift points and will also be able to controll thermo fans and a BBM, if you plan to grab them at a later date. If you're after better acceleration you should get the 4spd gbox and a new diff, something like an XR which is a 3.45 LSD. Also the NA series are Fairlanes, if your car is an E series '88 LTD it would be a DA.

You basically need to get a wrecked 4spd car to do the conversion

You basically need to get a wrecked 4spd car to do the conversion I said the 4sp & 3sp autos share the same 1st gear ratio......so in early E series that had 3sp auto, were fitted with a 2.77 diff.........when they went to 4sp autos, they changed diff ratios to either 3.08 or 3.23/3.27's....so they would have better take off.....OK????

So an EB1 ECU will not be suitable The auto ECU was separate till the EF came out, in the EF they made it part of the engine ECU....the EF ECU had 106 pins......the EB/ED has 60 pins. The auto ECU lives on the right hand side of the steering wheel, behind the instrument cluster.

As you havn't got smartlock you shouldn't have any issues with bems and alike.

A diff ratio change would be benificial.

them pictures um don't look like the Transmission Control Modules I have pulled out over the years. (unless there is a tcm and a BEM like thing.)
