G'day guys,
Time to buy new tyres for the XR6 so i'm out shopping. Had Falken ST115's on the front and they wore out far to quickly so i'm in the market for something a bit harder wearing, not too harsh on the pocket and still retain some decent handling. Been looking at the Nexen 3000 - $149 per tyre. Directional. Korean. Silica Toyo Tranpath SW - $179 per tyre. Non directional. Unknown. Non silica Sumitomo (don't know model) $199 per tyre. Directional. Japanese. Silica Speaking with the sales rep at the tyre store, he reckons that earlier falcons (read: EF / EL etc) are preferably driven on non-directional tyres. Something due to the suspension setup not being macpherson strut? Dunno how much truth in that, however i do find i'm wearing the front passenger tyre quickly on the outside, which he said is a common problem. Looking forward to any advice / input!

i had Toyo Transpath's a while back, they wore out a bit too quickly.. not sure about nexen or sumitomo, but bridgestones/yokohama have some tyres with good performance/wearing compromise i know a few EF/EL's with them and their quite happy.
At the moment im trying out the maxxis performance tyres from bob jane, they stick to the ground like glue even in wet weather so im quite impressed, and they aparently last for a long time (we'll have to see) and they were quite cheap too..

that's a load of s**t, there are plenty of later e series falcons out there on directional tyres. Those tyres are getting more popular and a mate of mine who sells tyres can't think of what the f**k that guy was on to come out with a comment like that. Probably just trying to encourage you to buy his tyres, which were not directional? I dunno...

he even went as far to say that some of his customers reverse the directional tyre to get less "tram tracking"? i reckon that was a load of BS but i stood and listened to what he had to say all the same...
its just very hard to get a good opinion out of these sales guys... but then again, if there was a perfect tyre, everyone would be on them

I have heard the firestones are pretty good. Though i havent tried them myself.

I have to say those Dunlop SP Sport 3000 i have on XR8 Ute, hold quite well to the ground, but at roughly $300 each, why wouldnt they....

yeah, my EF is on directionals, Nangkang 225/65R15's, getting fantastic wear out of em, mind you I don't smoke em at all. THey are a yokohama tread pattern used under license by nangkank, most tyres are the same... if you got plenty of $ to spend go for some pirelli's

the holding power of pirelli's are amazing.. if you can afford it go for them.. but be warned they wear out DAMN quick. mine started to wear after about 5 months, and thats with zero burnouts and taking full care of them (keeping pressure/alignment/balancing etc).. im told that 5 months is better than average too..
the tyre compound in them is soft, so it holds really well, but has the disadvantage of being prone to wear

I had a set of them on the back of mine once they where rough noisy and had no traction in the wet. but i got 20 thousand kms out of them thats giving them a hard thrashing includint quite a few donuts on the road.

Im running Pirrelli P6000's on my tickford AU Fairmont. They stick well to the road and the last set i had got very good wear out of them and thats with me thrashing the a** of the little @#*!ers, i had to get a couple of new front ones recently but that was cause wheel alignment was out, but the old rears are still going strong.

i would recommend SIMEX they are made in the dunlop factroy in Malaysia
they are about the $150 mark for 17" i have used them on most of our cars including our XR6 delivery ute they hold the road excellent and just seem to last forever

Ive had Simex at one stage. Good value for money, reasonably grippy with a decent life.
Then had Kumho Ecsta 712's. These were brilliant. Same price as the Simex ($148 each), really grippy and lasted for ages. 35,000km and were still sticking like s**t to a blanket even when they were on the wear indicator. Now have Dunlop SP3000a's. Best so far. Really quiet, grippy. As for life, will see. $170 in 16's and about $220 in 17's. |

I run Sumitomo HTRZ II 245's and 265's and their worlds, in the dry and wet, apart from the Nankangs that came with my wheel/tyre package. Just got back from a run up Jamberoo Pass and back and I stuck quite easily with an Audi A8.
