I have a whining sound coming from the drive-line when I take my foot off the throttle at cruising speeds, its worst is when I'm at bout 80k's. I've heard that it could be something like the wheel bearings or the u-joint. Does anyone have any clue about how much a new u-joint would cost. I've looked through other threads about it and it seems that the price seems to jump in different threads

Sounds more like the diff, a worn uni joint would cause vibration not whining.

Yeah I got the gearbox checked out a little while ago by a mechanic. He said it looked perfectly fine but he did say there was some wear and tear on the pinion seal. It is actually a vibration coming from the rear so its gotta be the uni joint.

uni joints with parts and labour cost about $50 to get replaced, so $100 for the 2 get em both done while at it.

Does this whirring noise only happen when driving in a straight line or does it get louder the more u corner and if so is the noise more biased to one side ?

I can make mine louder and sound sharper if I move the steering wheel back and forth. What would that mean?

Only when I drive in a straight line, I tried it before with the steering but its at its worse at about 80-90 km's

Just replace the both UJ's, if taking out the shaft yourself rember to copy the yellow dots at both ends of the shaft onto the diff flage and the transmission output shaft. Also if changing the UJ,s yourself be sure after they are in to give each bearing a soild hit on the ends so as they move freely.

OK, I don't know whether I will give it a go myself yet or not but it wouldn't hurt. I got a few mates who are mechanics so I'm sure they'd be be able to give us a hand if I need it
