As is discussed across many a threads here on FordMods.com the tailshaft has proven the be very much a "weak link" in the blue oval driveline system and WHAT THE HELL CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
Is there anywhere that has experience working with tailshafts? Are there guys around that can make up a 2 or even 3 piece tailshaft? Possibly of a different material? Alloy, Stainless S, etc etc metal aint my trade of choice and am sure my flawful knowledge in the area shines through but an upgrade to the tailshaft is definatly on the top of my WANT TO DO list. If anyone has any info on an aftermarket or upgraded/reinforced tailshaft for the EF/EL variety please let myself and everyone else know of where we can get these babies. Would love to really be able to put those 450rwkws to use |

Dunno, B series come stock with two pieces, and my EL made it's own two piece from a one piece.
there's at least one member here that has one. Best call Mal Wood however.

Is it on record that a steel eb-ed one has let go yet? if so at what torque? cause you hear as data_mine knows all too well that the alloy ones let go but you don't hear much about the steel ones.

My original one was a steel shaft.
I replaced it with an alloy one.

tiny bit off topic, ive seen EF/EL alloy tailshaft of an xr6 would this fit in my EB series 1??
Just curious cos it dont want mine to break........

Arn't the alloys the better ones? As ally is what comes on the XR's which don't have the speed limiter, and also on the LWB (including wagons) due to the extra length. |

As far as ive heard i dont think a steel one has gone yet. And xr's have speed limiters too, pre alloy tail shaft (ed and earlier) there was no speed limiter. And i beleve some steel ones have a double wall?
I must be lucky and have a double wall as ive never had a tailshaft problem in 8 years and shes been off the clock many a time.

Yes mine was a steel one, not double walled. I have seen double wall ones, but my EL didn't get one of those.

Ok so the options are then
Single wall steel = no good, these cars are fitted with speed limiters which are more than likely there to prevent the out of round rotation at high speed. Which in turn = vibration, harmonics & complete destruction. Alloy = has been know to go. cars with these are fitted with speed limiters as well. Double wall steel = ok so far, no speed limiter. Alloy plus carbon fibre = nothing heard of as yet, no speed limiter i know of??? Sound about right?

How do you tell a double walled shaft?
Also, can the BA+ tailshaft be adapted to fit an e series? what about AU? are they any different to E series? What about older XA/b/c/d/e/f tailshafts? |

So would my EB have a single walled steel shaft?? im sure its steel. Ive been 180km/h in mine an it still had more to go but backed off cos it didn't want to break anything.

Id say weight would be the easiest way to tell between double and single wall. But i think all ed and earlier would have a double.
