Just got the news back my gearbox has crapped itself. Local repairer wants $1400 just to get a new one for it.
Considering I'm still in love with this thing, but the engines got over 280,000km on it (and is also somewhat questionable) I've been wondering if buying a donor vehicle might be the way to go. Is it possible to take the gearbox, maybe the engine mounts (mine are beyond shot apprently), and possibly even the engine as well (mine has an LPG addon, but hopefully that could be moved over) from an EL (Falcon/Fairmont/etc) sedan and put them on an EL Fairmont wagon? Also, any idea what a mechanic would charge to do this? (I wouldn't even consider attempting something like this). |

Just wondering if they're physically the same between the sedan and wagon. I know the body from the back seats onwards differs, but from what little I know the front end/engine are the same between them, not sure about the gearbox or drivetrain though.
That, and if a mechanic would be willing to swap between vehicles, and how much $$$ they're likely to charge for doing so. You'd have to waste time getting old ones off each vehicle, then putting the donor on the other one. |

the only real differance between the two is ..... wagooon tailshaft is longer lol
there should be no problem swapping the boxes or engines |
