Hey guys,
As the topic suggests i get a huge vibration through the tailshaft on my XR8. This only happens when i hit 180km/h. But its a really bad vibration, you can hear and really feel it. I've noticed that the tailshaft seems to be alloy and really thick, about 3 inches or so. I've been told this is an AU tailshaft but i'm not 100% sure. I was wondering what i can do to fix this vibration? I hardly ever hit that speed anyway, but when i do, its so bad it makes me back right off. Thanks Dave |

yeah, definately not good lol
Just get the tailshaft balanced, or get a two piece one, balance that. Also make sure that the bolts are all tight. And get some tailshaft loops. Cheers

Mine does the same, cbfed getting it fixed because I rarely reach that speed and won't be near it for a while. Get it balanced, $75 last quote I got.

I can feel a vibration at bout 190-200, not bad enough that i worry, altho at that speed i dont plan to go any further aye.
As drone said, get her balanced n that should get rip of it. Maybe do uni joints n fit tail shaft loop also to be safe..etc

It could be worn uni's, check them also
My EL I6 has a tail shaft as you discribe, mine is a 97 model well before AU.

Thanks Guys, i was thinking i would have to get it balanced.
I'm still not sure about the tailshaft though, someone told me its off an AU, but I don;t really have a clue myself. It just looked way too thick to be stock. Dave |

Whats a rough price for a good two-piece set up? |

not sure on the price, but the $75 quote for a balance, sounds about right. That would be step one.
Cheers

The tailshaft in my EL starts to vibrate at 210kph,have thought of getting it balanced but as I dont do these speeds constantly I coulnt be bothered.

Its either 3 3/4 or 3 1/4 inch alloy, they have been used since EB (not all models) and are still used now on BA utes and wagons. Would be best to have the shaft straighted before getting it balanced, otherwise it will be perfect at the speed its balanced and if the speed varies so does the balance.
If your going to be constantly doing speeds excessive of 180-200kp/h id go for 3 inch steel but if you want to spend big go for a 2 piece 2.5 inch steel with centre and rear CV instead of uni joints, the diff flange will also have to be replaced. After all that have a full system balance (shaft balanced in car) |

All EL XR6's and XR8's got an alloy tailshaft to allow for their higher speed limiters than normal.
You wouldnt want to swap it for steel. Alloy is stiffer and lighter, reducing the weight of this spinning shaft, which is why they use alloy and not steel. There is a place in Sunshine... M & S Driveshafts.. Can do everything there, unis, balancing, straightening if needed. I think its $140 to replace unis and balance, take $50 off if you take the tailshaft into them. Cost me $180 as mine needed to be straightened as well, which tended to cause some fun vibrations above 130km/h. |

$140 to replace both unis and balance!!! thats what 2 unis cost from ford but they are original spicers, i get them alot cheaper tho. i know first hand that steel is stronger than alloy as we test the ford shafts where i work. if the shafts is straightened and balanced properly there will be minimal flex and vibration at high speeds. in the end its what you want to spend. if you need help drop me a line.

Guys,
I have been through all of this in the past, and bet that you are all experiencing the problem in auto cars. The manual cars do vibate a little, just not enough to warrant enough concern, well that is my opinion anyway. With my ELXR8, I had 4 auto boxes rebuilt under warranty. I was constantly taking it back to Ford, and complaining about the vibration. If you get to the speed that the vibration starts, knock the auto into neutral and see what I mean. Its basically the case heating up, and all startin to move. A two piece shaft helps, but sustained high speed running brings the vibration on...... good luck |

That makes sense actually.. My uncle always told me that the reason the limiter is there is that the auto boxes aren't built to keep up with such speeds.
