Believe it or not, wheel nuts improperly torqued will warp discs.
I have heard stories and read articles about people getting brand new discs and coming back within a few hundred k's and having to have new discs again because they are warped too much to even macine up. That's why it's important to go to a quality brake and tyre places when you get brake work done or new tyres. |

mine had exactly same symptoms and each time was brake shudder from warped discs, caused by seized calipers. front shudder you should feel through the wheel, and rear shudder through the seat and rest of car

if the wheel shudders when you are not braking (ie sitting on 100ks) could also be wheels in need of balancing. before getting this done, its worth taking each off and cleaning all of the brake dust etc out from inside them. its amazing how clean they can look on the outside and how dirty they are on the inside.

if u have new discs i bet its the caliper slides, probably left top one is siezed up. assuming u used good quality discs and not cheap stuff.

I did have the problem of my upper suspension arm bushes on the right hand side worn away so much there was nothing left.... with them replaced got rid of a very annoying movement and noise... How much did ths cost you, sounds like the problem i have. I went to my local mechanic to replace them (as I couldn't be assed doing the suspension myself this time). The bushes cost me about $50 and he charged me about an hour of labour time. All up $115, and I still got a spare set of bushes for the other side if I choose to replace. You'll know if they have gone if there is back and forward movement of the upper suspension arm... it should only move up and down, not left to right. I rekon I could have replaced them myself, seems like an easy job... good idea to get a wheel alignment after though as it majorly put my toe in/out out of spec. having the bushes worn.

I'm not only getting the shudder during braking at high speeds but also a distinct clunking noise when I'm steering at low speeds (like slowing down to enter a driveway). Is that related? I saw a couple of words about something called "anti-knock braking shims" causing this but have nfi what these are or even if they actually exist.

id doubt they are related, the shudder is from warped rotors its also know as brake shimmy. the other clunk problem could be anything from the steering rack to tie rod ends. the brake shims they are talking about are 2 small tin plates that sit at both ends of the brake pad, the older brakes didnt have them on and wore groves into the brake housing and would clunk when applied sometimes as the pad went over the grooves.

The steering rack play can also cause vibration at certain speeds and braking - I know mine had this problem for a while until I change the rack and tie rod ends out.

Wheel alignment and balance done... new brake pads... But, theres still a shudder in the steering colum ONLY under braking... I would like to get them machined... Question is... Is it relatively easy to remove the front hubs? Sent her off to the mechanic to get the discs machined... they were under legal size so I got the front discs replaced with new DBA ones and had the bearing repacked. It stopped the shudder from the front of the car... cost.. $329.
