Hey guys ive noticed a fair bit lately that when im braking from say 80 down to 60 or 60 to stop, farily quick my steering wheel vibrates quite a bit. Its been like this for a while but i thought maybe its time i figured out what it is. Im guessing something is just loose or worn but i really dont know much about steering and suspension so maybe someone can help me out?

possibly ur brake rotars need to be machined, tried a tyre balance?

wouldnt be the rotors they are basically brand new. No i havent tried having the wheels balanced i thought that could be a reson. My wheel also vibrates a bit at times when im just idling.
Wait rotors and discs are the same thing right? |

maybe they are warped? i've had brake shudder before, and its been due to the rotors needing machining...

Well i had a recent inspection and they said the brakes are band new and perfect condtion so stuffs me. I might be able to take it to my uncle that owns a brake and clutch shop he might be able to see if its the brakes for me.

yes, rotars and discs are the same thang.
confusion say; if ones steering wheel vibrates under braking its usually the brake rotars are eigher warped or are in need of being machined, I think its about $20 a disc/rotar to get them machined.. I THINK.. lol Could also be that your tyres are out of balance, but .. should always do it if so, id say its ur rotars man.. |

A visual inspection wont tell you thay are warped (unless they are real bad) Warped rotors are very common. Take them to your uncle if they are warped he should be able to tell you what is best for you to do. If they are thick enough, you can get them machined. Or you may need to replace them (start at about $75each) Remember to replace the brake pads also.

Also consider worn wheel bearings and sticky caliper slides....

Wheel bearings are an aspect many people neglect and can be the culprit of grinding noise (bad and not so bad) and shaking steering wheel at certain speeds..
Altho its usually not when brake, just when you get to a certain speed, say 90-110 km/hr

I have the same problem...
I did have the problem of my upper suspension arm bushes on the right hand side worn away so much there was nothing left.... with them replaced got rid of a very annoying movement and noise... Wheel alignment and balance done... new brake pads... But, theres still a shudder in the steering colum ONLY under braking... I would like to get them machined... Question is... Is it relatively easy to remove the front hubs?

I'm getting the same thing, severly at 110 down to -> 100/90k's... Doesn't help that the rotors are at the minimum amount left on them... I think they had 1/2 a mm left on them at the last check.
Great excuse to get slotted rotors on the front now! Wolfpac

Either get NEW rotors or get them meachined up properly.
Then get bearings done on ALL wheels as same time. This job is even do'able by yourself apart from the machining the rotors if you choose that option. Id just save some dollars n goto a brake specialist n tell them what the go is, they should know what it is and how/much to fix it.

Had/seen the same problem on a few falcons with new brakes rotors etc, even new suspension .
Replace the caster rod bushes (front and rear) ... that will fix it .. well, it has done on many of my cars. |
