Hey people.
first post for me, have been a member for a while and got some great info off other threads, but i have a problem.

I have a 1995 EF gli 4.0L auto, just recently i got it lowered, lovells coils, kyb shocks. now since getting this done the car has developed a bad vibration between 50 and 60 km/h. it seems to be present with power on and off, and becomes more noticeable with more ppl in the car. i am hoping that maybe the uni's need replacing and that will fix that. the car has 203,000k's on it

any help would be greatly appreciated.

not sure mate,but if the weight affects it it would be susp related id say.

did u get bump stops when u got your car lowered?

no, no bump stops were fitted, i assumed that the originals would be up to the job. i called the suspension shop and they said they had not heard of this problem before. i am takin it in again on friday to have a look underneath and also get a camber kit fitted.

welcome to fordmods mate.

just my 2 cents, this wasn't after I lowered it, but from what happened to me. I had the same vibrations (BAD), from 50-70Km/h, and it ended up been loose tailshaft bolts. So if yours are tight, then it would be the uni's.

The only problem I see is that Im assuming that it happened straight after the install? Then it might be lowering related, which could mean something wasn't tightened properyly, or something left out... check over the sway bar, tortion bar, springs, shocks, just to make sure everything is in place.

It is more than likely the UJ's. When one lowers a car, one upsets the optimum operating angle of the tailshaft. This is often remedied by places like Whiteline, who put out a kit to reposition the upper and lower control arms on the diff housing, if you have control arms. If you have leaf springs, you is stuffed, and you just have to renew the unis every year or so, or put up with the vibes, which should only appear @ certain revs, and then fade out. Mine come in @ 90 to 105 kph, and go after 110 kph, which is a bastard 'cos it means I gotta speed everywhere :wink:

ok
so coil sprung live rear axle.......control arms? i have no idea.
i think if new uni's fix it i will simply replace them when the vibs return,

has anyone else had this problem when lowering their car. the car has lovell super lows in the rear.

Basically the pinion angle has changed, by tilting the diff forward slightly eg. 4 deg this will fix the problem. with coils there are kits but with leaf springs the rear of the diff can be wedged, not sure if its legal though. If the UJ's have never been replaced it would be a good idea to do them also.

interesting....
so that then begs the question, what are these kits called and how much do they cost?
any takers??

do i really need a kit straight away or will replcaing the uni's fix it for a while?

i was just talkin to a mate and he said that depending on the type of joint the price to repair may be quite nasty, he asked whether the unijoint uses a stakes yoke or circlips.
i have no idea what this means but the yoke is expensive to fix apparently
any ideas??

first thing to do is replace BOTH unis. they are a external circlip uni.

what can happen is that the unis have worn to suit the original height of your car. now its been lowered they are running on worn and new surfaces and can cause a vibration. if this doesnt fix it you will need to play with your pinion angle . if your a bit of an engineer you can re-position the control arm mounts on your diff. or make up some adjustable arms. if your not the engineering type then i have heard of using EL upper arms to fix the problem. but i am not 100% on which arm exactly need to be used.

lowered the ol heart rate a bit.

are the uni's expensive? i take it a rookie like me sould be able to fit them, with the help of a hoist or car stands?

Every car that I've lowered has suffered from vibration problems. I have just learned to live with it :lol:

Original spicer UJ's from ford are around $70 each which is way too much!! you can go after market but the quality isnt as good. If only you were in melbourne id help you out as we supply ford their shafts..
