The sole purpose of an LSD isn't to lay two black straps whenever you feel like it.
It's about getting power down through 2 wheels (twice the grip) instead of one. Like sturmovik said, if all you want to do is burnouts, weld up the diff. Or leave it as a Single spinner, easier to smoke up one wheel... {USERNAME} wrote: problem with the hydratrac diff is that when the diff is overworked and gets too hot the fluid thins too much and essentially acts as a single spinner
I guess this is where Diff Coolers come into play. Pity theres not more EL GT's around, so we could find out what there like

...single spinner and LSD act the same if not spinning. LSD however is about keeping better traction, on the verge of breaking it.
Dropping strips, lock your diff, just be warned...I had a minispool in mine, and the axels never look like they used too. Nor does anything else like it(tyres, suspension), and it just becomes really bad with parking, etc.. Interesting note about the outback...never knew that. I would also stick with mechanical, I like the simplicity. Cheers

What diff does the RTV ute use? Some sort of electronic Hydratrack?

its a dana\spicer if i remember correctly. When you go above 40km it automatically dis engages which is a b**ch.

There are a few different typres of diff.
Major categories are: Viscous LSD - a fluid and clutchpacks controll the level of slip with heat. Can also use a special type of electically controlled fluid that makes them controllable by the ecu. Clutch packs - similar idea to above but in different configuration to give faster response. Used on BA XR's. -Can be controlled hydraulically by the ECU, as used on the Mitsubishsi EVO and BMW M3. Mechanical Cone type - Used on falcons up to BA uses cones pressed into 'cups' to limit torque, unfortunately become easily worn and inconsistent over time, however very cheap to make. Helical LSD - Solely mechanical uses special combination of gears to maintain up to 80% torque transfer across the axle, used because of its reliable non-wearing nature and instant response. Ie. on the S15 200SX. Locking diff - A single spinner that can be locked solid by application of air/electrc/hydraulic. Commonly used on 4WD and Ford RTV. There are others such as rachet diffs and many sutble variations of the above. but there is the main idea.

the viscous LSD'd used in a lot of cheap 4wd's are pretty s**t and easy to turn it into a single spinner. I am quoting from experience with the holden cruize and another cheap 4wd but cant remember which one. Also if the nissan x-trails have an LSD it must be viscous as well because i can get each wheel spinning independantly on that too. I would much rather a mechanical LSD with medium lock up

the hyrda tracks cannot have diff cooler put on em as the deep internals of em are a sealed unit.. it can be serviced but the guts of the thing spin leaving no way for a cooler to be put on essentially it is 2 chambers, centre spins outside or second chamber is the fluid transfer chamber.
