"Viscous LSD: works similarly to a torque converter, but differential action is limited by a thick gel/grease.
A more expensive option than a conventional LSD, examples of viscous LSD's are the Hydratrak, and factory LSD's found in some jap imports." I am interested. I have not seen these mentioned in threads before. This is a neewbei question, but can a thick (in consistancy) addative make your regular LSD into a viscous LSD? Or does a viscous LSD feature a converter (ala torque converter) somewhere that a regular LSD doesnt? ?

You can't turn a mechanical LSD into a viscous one.
Of note is the fact that with viscous LSD's, they can use a substance that changes it's viscosity based on electrical current. It's what rally cars use in their diffs, making them completely controllable. i.e. Fully locked to fully open and the turn of a dial

See the N12 Pulsar SSS Vector ... they had them from factory. Nissan has used these quite a bit.
Also the hardcore Rally cars usually run mechanical LSDs ... well all the EVOs and VR4s that I have been in have. You can tell by the high-pitch whine they make.

ooo this is very interesting, anyone have any web sites or something so i can learn abit more. I always new about the hydratrak but i was put off by reading in my owners manual that pretty much it doesnt take much to f**k them.
It sounds very good though eh

When I said rally, I meant like WRC cars. If your running a hardcore mechanical LSD, chances are you're running a straight cut gear box as well, so it would be hard to distinguish the whining :p:D Mechanical diffs are obviously stronger. All the drift guys that start of with Viscous LSD's dump them for mechanicals as soon as they get half serious.

Wow.
Learn something everyday... Must have been ford experimenting with the use of them. Obviously didn't go well, they haven't used them on anything since have they?

i think that thery put the hydrateck in the elgt cos its a performance car just like the big brakes and those things are expensive
does anyone no how much a el gt diff would cost

problem with the hydratrac diff is that when the diff is overworked and gets too hot the fluid thins too much and essentially acts as a single spinner until the fluid cools again and gets its power transfer propertys back.. or some s**t like that..
VS HSV senators had em.. my mate was always having issues with his, two laps of eastern creek cooked it, give it 5 mins to cool down and wha-laa LSD again.. go figure.. but HSV said that was a quirk with the diff and was not designed to do track work.. but HSV tremselves encourage you to take your car on the track (voids warranty.)

Weld your diff up then, if leaving patches is all you want to do.
