Well basically, probably most WA people know..

the max rim width is 7"...

so all the guys runnin 8" wide rims whats your take on this? ever been hassled about it? ever seen it enforced?

i know with my insurance they didnt even ask about the width of the tyres? i said got some 17's and they said ok thats fine.

anyone know why 7" was chosen?

blah blah, im tired and just spent money on rims and just thought about it :?

You shouldnt have anyone querying it unless your tyres/rims stick outside your guards I would have thought (seeing as you have already bought the rims).

from the DPI website...

" Rim width must not exceed the maximum rim width specified by the manufacturer by more than 25mm (1") (for passenger vehicles manufactured after 1st January 1973, the manufacturers rim width shall be taken as that specified on the tyre placard).

In any event, rim width shall not exceed 177.8 mm (7") unless specified by the manufacturer as standard equipment for the vehicle in question. No increase in rim width is permitted for vehicles fitted with original equipment rims in excess of 177.8 mm (7") width. "

ive never been hasseled by anyone, id be surprised ppl sell so many 8" rims in e series offset if its illegal tho

how wide where the elgt rims? 8"? if thats the case then we can probably get way with any 8" coz that size rim was standard somewhere in the range of e series models

For all you WA guys worrying about your rim width, just try and get a hold of a tyre placard off an EL GT or FBT (probably easier said then done :P).
Fraud might have them...

i have heard of cops being real crackers about it and yellowing people for 7.5 inch wide.

call john at wheelsworld in ozzy park, and have a chat to him
he may be able to help u get a permit from the DPI.

apparently there is a new list of reccomemended wheel sizes that are waiting to be put through legislation, so that we are more in line with the rest of the country in regards to wheel sizes. What this means is that e series can run 17x 8without a drama, which they do in NSW anyway.

but being the a government organisation it will probably take a while to get the new laws through.

i had the same issue, so i gave up with 8" wide and just got some FTR's 16x7, like to see a cop defect me for that:)

that new legislation sounds good.. think we are the only state that cant have 8" wide? :\

better try pull some political contacts and try get that legislation though!

could you get a permit for 8" wide? also how could a cop acuratly check the width? even at the pits? u can put 235's on a 7" rim... pfft, wankers! 2.5cm yeh thats gonna make a difference :\

yeh its very stupid
i called an engineer in regards to this matter and he said that i can get him to give me a permit and it would cost a bit o money, but he said that all he would do is check for adequate clearence on full lock and suspension compression, then give u the nod of approval if it clears.

i also queried him on why WA will only allow 7" and others will allow 8" considering all of australia follows the same ADR's.

He gave me the impression that if u really wanted to push it without a permit, you could try and prove that as it (8") is legal in another state, it could be shown that it is safe and non detremental to car handling, and there is no real reason fro the 7" rule, except that it was probably written decades ago when cars were running round on cheese cutters.

damn pencil pushing state government, no idea of anything outside of WA.
