Hi Guys,
I saw yesterday an EL GLi Wagon with disc brakes on the rear, I thought they were all drums? (on the pov spec ones) Anyhow this got me wondering, what model wagons had the disc brake rear as this seems a worthy conversion from the moldy drum setup I have currently.

All E series have disc brake rear.
EA-ED had disc brake handbrake EF-EL had drum-in-disc hand brake

Wagons guys. Mine and the Ex's (soon to be mine for spares also) are both EF GLi's, both have drum rears and both are original. Every other GLi Wagon I have seen apart from the one the other day has been drum on the back, even at the wreckers. I have seen Fairmont Wagons with drums.
But if they are around I'll certainly be looking at swapping them over. Should I expect any hassles with the brake lines? Going from drum to caliper? I've never changed them over before.

Yeah me too! Every one I've seen and everyone I know who has had one had disc brake rear.
Even my EA had discs in the rear

Maybe the ones shipped to SA only had drums... it's a Vic plot to kill us all I tell ya!!!
But no, all the wagon's I have seen (well actually stopped to take a look at) have been drum apart from the one recently.

Quote: Maybe the ones shipped to SA only had drums... it's a Vic plot to kill us all I tell ya!!! maybe your right there , though I doubt Ford would go to the trouble. Just looking around online and in two workshop manuals, nothing mentioned about drum brakes on falcons after the XF. Bendix don't list a separate listing for a drum rear on any E series. From EF onwards All falcons have a drum-in-disc arrangement on the rear but the drum is small and only used for the handbrake, is this what your referring to?

I've never had the rear wheels off one of these to do anything with the brakes, might have to go study the manual. Only thought about it because of the car I saw the other day had a set of 5 spoke wheels with very thin spokes and it had a true blue, in your face, nice shiny disc brake looking at me with nicely painted calipers. And I thought about the back of mine, and how crappy it looked in comparison. Ford would go to the trouble to punish SA for the Crapadore.

I've got a 96 EFII GLi Wagon and it has disks on the back and ABS.
My dad had a fleet of early EA wagons, povo packs, most with the 3.2lt engine and they all had disks on the back. Maybe the drums were retro fitted? (can't think why you would do that though) The handbrake assembly has a drum inside the disk.

This has been bugging the hell out of me. Mine is definitely drum on the back and today, when I dropped my son off at the ex's so he could have some time with his Mum on his birthday, had a quick look at her old wagon, and yup there's drums on that one too. I'm not 100% on the history of mine, but she was the 2nd owner of hers and it was an ex Officeworks rep vehicle. So why they have drums, who put them on and when, is a mystery to me as they look (mind you that doesn't mean much under a 15-16yr old car) like original fitment.
Not for long though, I can see a trip to the wreckers in the near future. I could use an excuse to fit lowered springs.....

take a wheel off and take a pic...
it might look like drum from behind but from factory they are not drum.. considering even the 1988 series 1 ea wagons had disc brakes on the rear.. |

I have just made the biggest pelican out of myself!!!!! Yes they are indeed disk on there.... but Christ are they tiny! The wagon I saw the other day must have had a brake upgrade or something because they looked MASSIVE compared to these pissy little things. Deepest apologies to everyone and no doubt a good laugh is being had at my expense, I know I laughed when I took the wheel off and realized I'd made a total d**k of myself!! Well I need to go and find a quiet cupboard now, and hide my shame.....
