go 3.45's - as per the XR specs - a good balance for both take-off & cruising...

There seems to be a consensus that between 3.23 and 3.7 are the best.

kickdown can be easily adjusted by the cable, i reckon you should go with 3.5-3.7z

Ive got 3.73 diff gears in my stock ef 4ltr auto and instead of getting 480 out of a tank i get 600kms and the take off is AWESOME!!! The car laboures less and this should have been the way ford brang them out!!!!! At 100km/h it revs at 2000rpm with 235/45R17 rims and tyres

3.45 Its perfect balanc ein my books noticable take off and improvement. To don't want to higher diff gear and you don't want to lo a diff gears 3.45 will be about as lower as i will go.

I'm not sure what the XG "S" ute runs ... but I can tell you ... it's pretty damn good on the highway for fuel ... and in 5th @ 100km/h it's sitting around the 2000rpm mark.
And still retains pretty decent take-off as well.

We've got 3.50:1 in our Falcon powered transit and with a 5 speed for cruising it would be perfect. With a 4 speed it is revving a little more than I would like at highway speeds.

Daimmit, now im steering away from the 3.73s, and leaning towards the 3.45 gears.
Surely it cant be that bad... I do about 60 city / 40 highway driving. Maybe about 1/2 of each.

Seriosuly for an Auto You'd want at least 3.73:1.
Even on the highway this shouldn't affect your cruise economy too much, although the revs might bother you a bit. Man even with 4.11's a Manual with a 3.08:1 diff has a shorter effective 1st gear ratio, lol... |

I have 3.45gears, and hate them, going back to 3.08 .
But then I do hwy driving, (quite a bit) and from lunching differences between the 3.08 & 3.45, Can't really feel much . |
