Hey guys,

the past couple weeks when i want to take off from a stationary position my gear box seems to be stuck in 3rd gear. Now initially i thought it was limp mode,

But this morning it happened to me again, so i stoped the car put it in park turned it off then turned it back on and it was like normal shifting through all gears. This is about the 4 time i have had to do this

Any thoughts on what this may be? And if anyone else had had this issue before?

Any help would be great, Cheers Lowlane98

Mine does the same thing mate, only intermittently. I think mine does it when it when it gets hot, maybe the cat is cooking something on that side of the trans. I am going to run a diagnostic this weekend, see if it throws any codes. Check your trans fluid level mate. When's the last time you had a trans service done?

These symptoms sound familiar: 98 ON/OFF Solenoid Fault Circuit Possible Symptoms: Transmission in limp mode (3rd gear only, no converter lock up, high line pressure).

Possible Cause: Blown fuse or faulty relay. Loose or dirty battery terminals.

High resistance at transmission and engine earth leads. Wiring harness fallen onto exhaust manifold. Faulty or disconnected wiring harness on transmission. Disconnected ECM connector or bent ECM pins. Low battery voltage. High battery voltage (regulator or alternator fault). Shorted S5 solenoid. Loose wires on solenoids. Faulty ECM.

The last service I gave the tranny was a while ago, was gona do it very soon. Let us know how you go with the diagnostics test and what codes come up if you don't mind :)

I had a feeling it could be somthing electrical, only by the way it was reacting , like there a poor connection or somthing like that. It's weird because it only happens every now and then.

It's probably eithier the inhibitor switch, the wiring between the engine harness and the transmission, or one of the thermo fan relays, I don't know what the thermo fan relays have to do with it but they do.

would either of these possibilities be expensive?, im thinking of taking it down to my local transmission guy and get him to service it and have a look at this issue.

Keen to see your reply with what code comes up :)

Going round my dads on Sunday lowlane, ill let ya know any codes I get out of the car asap.
Does your car feel like its slipping going into gear sometimes or the revs flare a bit between gears? That's s5 solenoid problems which mine does but its barely noticeable.
I only really noticed it driving today because my old boy mentioned it.
Ring up a couple of transmission places and get a quote for changing the s5 solenoid and a service mate if your not confident diving into your gearbox. I'm think the s5 is on the valve body so its not a trans out of car job.
I'm just lucky my old boy has been a mechanic for 35+ years and just a tiny bit of his knowledge has rubbed off on me. If it is the solenoid ill be swinging spanners next weekend with me dad supervising haha

Hey lowlane how are your battery terminals? Mine are the crappy stocky ones and the negative is kind of loose, upgrading on Wednesday to see if that fixes the problem. I don't really feel like diving into the trans if I can avoid it.

My terminals are pretty good, i went down to the transmission specialist today and he hooked his scanner up to my car, and it came back with a (GEAR SOLENOID code 671), so im getting him to service the transmission and replace the faulty solenoid.

That might be whats causing your problem also!! Thanks for your help guys :)

I don't know if this will be the correct answer, but if you have a faulty TPS in those models it actually screws up the transmission. It only ever happened with fairlanes with the 2 TPS's.

The faulty solenoid was the only code to come up, but thats not to say that its the only cause.

How much is a new tps? and can i fit it myself if the solenoid isnt the cause of the problem?

Sorry mate, don't know how much it costs :/ Call up ford or logicar? (or similar). Fitting shouldn't be rocket science though.
