I was just wondering whats the easiest way to weld up a diff in an EB? i know you have to weld the spider gears together to make it like a mini-spool, but not much other than that. Can it be done in car or?
Any help much appreciated

it can be done in the car but would probably work better if you took it out and done it, and besides if you do it in the car you will end up with slag and spatter and all sorts of stuff rolling around in your diff housing just waiting to get caught in something u dont want it to

For a completely locked diff, weld the crownwheel to the pinion

from memory its pretty hard to get enough weld in there thru the inspection holes in the hemisphere, for the sake of $100-$120 I would get a mini spool and put it in.

To the OP, do you already own a welder? If not, get a minispool.

the cheapest iv found on ebay was around $75 for a mini spool and a full spool was $260

Ok so i've decided against welding the diff, its too dodgy, can buy a 28 spline mini spool from a guy locally. Hes told me that i need to take the wheels off, unbolt the axles, take the diff cover off and remove the hemisphere and put the mini spool in. Once we get to there I'm pretty lost.
Would anyone have a step by step procedure or be keen to help for a price?

basicaly all u have to do is unbolt the wheels, unbolt brake callipers and abs sensor, take out the axles (if there stiff, which they should be, take off the brake rotor, turn it around, screw 3 nuts on a few threads then pull sharply on the rotor a few times till the axle comes out), take off backing plate, unbolt the centre itself, then remove from the housing with a small amount of force BUT be carefull not to break the shimms either side of the centre.
once the centre is out, unbolt the diff gear using a rattle gun, the bolts on this are left hand thread and extremely tight. once the gear is off, get a screwdriver or something similar and tap it in the join where the two halves meet, remember to tap around the centre in various spots so they seperate evenly, then once its open im lost from there as i haven't done a mini spool yet lol last time i had one apart we welded everythin to everythin haha, so far my mate has snapped an axle and had the wheels come loose three times and the centre is still holding strong. oh and if this is to confusing just pm me your email address and i will email u a photocopy of the pages on how to dissasemble the diff that are in my manual Tomo

as above, then once you have the hemisphere apart you will see the planetary and sun gears, remove the roll pins that hold the large pins, that go thru the gears, in place and remove the pins and gears, you will then see how the mini spool sits in place of all these gears and the large pins will insert into the mini spool and the roll pins will hold them back in the original place. then reassemble the hemisphere and place back into the diff and reassemble as per normal, the axles will now slide into the mini spool that has replaced the gears and once your done you will have a doughnut machine like never before.
note: be real careful putting the hemisphere back into the housing with the shims/spacers, its easy to break them when you are tapping them back in, just go gental and take your time, oh and make sure when you take them out you mark what side is what, they have to go back in the same side they came out of as this adjusts your crown wheels mesh with the pinion. good luck with it, Cheers, Rob.
