Hey guys
Coming home tonight i turned right into my street at normal speed and all of sudden then was an almighty bang like i had hit something really hard or bottomed out the car into a pothole real bad. I pulled over immediately had a look around and couldnt see anything wrong. I got back into the car and crawled it home at 20km/h coz there is a constant thudd thudd thudd from the rear of the car that you can hear and feel. It still shifts into reverse and drive all fine but there is this bad thudd noise. my inner left cv joint seal was stuffed for 2 weeks and leaked diff oil but i got that fixed on thursday and the oil refilled (took about 800ml). Could it not have had enough oil in it so therefore wore it out quicker and it just happened to let go as i turned a corner? What else might it be, there is nothing in tyres and i dont think anything is caught up in the brake caliper. The fact that it made this massive bang noise is worrying. Thanks in advance for the info Cheers Phil

probly jack it up and have a look. moove things around to try replicate a thud with ya hands by turning the wheels.
i would say if it was the diff that went bang then there would be no drive. could be the drive shaft itself?

hmmm i had a look under it and all seemed to be ok and in the right place. Ill try jack it up with the hand brake off to spin the wheels but it does take a lil bit of speed before i can hear it, like rolling along in idle there is no noise but accelerating to about 20 or so i can here the thudd then

The one time I wrecked a diff (I was 17), I sheared a few teeth off. It made an almighty bang going around a corner. After that, it would slip slightly (due to the missing teeth) then thud regularly as I was driving. Took the rear cover off the diff and scooped out a small pile of gear teeth and fragments. I couldn't really complain, as the diff was just getting me back for all the abuse I had given it.

sounds like a broken crown wheel tooth, only showing up when there is load on the diff, is a common diagnosis for an uncommon problem. I doubt low oil for a bit caused the issue, but I don't think it helped it either. You won't know till you pull the cover.

Thanks efxr6wagon and Dave, sounds exactly like what happened. My mech should come round tomorrow and listen to it to confirm. You think I should drive it to my mechs shop or get it towed (shop prolly only 15km away) Will it do more damage to other parts of the car driving it?
Cheers Phil

Just an update, originally thought it was my inner cv joint on the left side had popped out again but my mech got it onto the hoist and turns out the diff is stuffed (I did drive it about 15km at 60 and it just thudded along lol) Anyways i looked into 4.11 and LSD but it all ended up being too expensive as I needed to change drive and tailshafts and other s**t.
I just ordered a XR6 diff from FTG so hopefully my mech should have that by Thursday morning and can get it fitted up by the weekend. It will pickup a little bit being a 3.45 diff as i currently have the XT (3.23) diff so looking forward to that. I will take it easy till i can get it down to Joe to remap the trans so the shift points are proper!

Do shift points need to be remapped? I thought shift points were based on engine RPM, not vehicle speed.

Apparently they do. The wrecker said I could probably get away with it as I wasnt doing a huge diff ratio difference but if i went anything higher then i would however my tuner said for the best performance best to remap the tranny to the new diff ratio. Its not a lot of work and i already had it tuned with him so have the xcal 3 device so may as well get it done.

mine went from 3.23 to 3.45 and yes it has to be tuned otherise under heavy / wot it smashes the limiter bfore changing and isnt very comfortable or good for racing.

You can't do 4.11 diff gears ): I had a place here quote me 1600 to drive in, change the gears and bearings and drive out.
how much was the xr6 diff from ftg?

hey mate, you can, they come from a M86 territory diff but in order to fit the m86 you need to change driveshaft and other s**t to make it work (all too expensive). The converter places which will use aftermarket gears and stuff to make 4.11 fit inside the M80 (which is what i got) but best to fit a lsd if going with a short ratio like that otherwise ull b single pegging it everywhere (it was all too hard for me in the end and i just want my car back lol)
I went with the single pegger xr6 diff off a car that had 89k on the clock, FTG charged me $450 and $60 for delivery which I thought was pretty good Should hopefully have the car back by the weekend
