what stall speed would a 10 inch converter for a 6cyl C4 be I have been told around 2500 but the bloke who told me drives a tarago and has no teeth,and then i get told 2800 by a guy who doesnt even have a car??? gawd i hate working with the public sometimes please help

One way to find out is stationary stall speed, in gear, brakes on hard, foot to the floor, read tacho, then put in nuetral, and hold rpm at 1500 to 2000 to let the oil get out of the convertor to cool off. Only do this once if possible, let it get really cool before doing it again.
The next stall test is on the move, drive at approx 60kmh, accelerate as much as possible without the kickdown coming in, and see what the tacho reads. These 2 figures will not be the same. they maybe as close as 300rpm. I built a 351C with C10F tranny, 2500 stall, and the engine pulls it over to 3300rpm, on the move & stationary. Its a Dominator histall. I think it isn't real good. Hope that gives you something to work on.

That ain't gonna help. A 10" convertor could be anywhere from 2500rpm to 3500rpm. Ya need a tacho, to see whats happening at what rpm's.

if you do it like that cjh, your converter would have to be pretty loose to not overcome the rear brakes with the torque multiplication. The easiest way is to do a flash stall test.
roll at 10/15 km/h and then tramp it, the rpm the motor instantly jumps to before then going on is the stall speed. this however doesnt really help you without a tacho lowxr. only 2 ways i can think of to check it, take it to a tranny specialist or get a new tacho! |
