hi
i was going to change the oil in my 5 speed
as its a little low instead of just topping it up i will fill it with fresh oil.
my question is what oil do you guys use in your box's
the ford manual recommends to use dexron II (auto trans fluid)
im not sure what to use?????

does auto fluid have the same lubricating properties as gear oil..??

why does ford use trans fluid in there t5's???
im sure there's a reason for it.
any info will good

thanks

I was under the impression the t5 used dex3 and some sort of additive.

Have a search for posts made by tickford6 on the matter - he knows his stuff and ive seen him discuss it before.

DexronIII and 200ml of lubrizoil.

This is from a post from tickford_6, a reputable source of info.

the ford repair manual states
Lubrication
capacity..............1.9 litre
specification........Dexron II (Motorcraft R1-36)
Oil additive..........Lubrizol 7906 (150ml)

But AFAIK most shops tend to use dexron III and 200 ml of lubrizol.

dont bother changing your oil, just wait till you have to do a clutch then do it. Theres no need

Redline lightweight shockproof oil or Redline MT90 if you dont drive hard all the time.

Expensive but excellent oil. Will make a difference to how your gearbox feels when changing gears.

I use Castrol Transmax Z, which is a fully synthetic DexronIII.
Improved the feel of my gearbox, so I recommended it to a mate - and he is happy too.

interestingly, when the EB's were released with the V8's, the V8 gearbox specification called for gear il, whereas the I6 needed dexII with lubrizol

the clutch was changed about 3 months ago
just before i brought the car.

after i buy a car i always check trans and diff oil .
when i checked the box oil it was about 2" below the filler plug
anyway i put a piece of wire in the hole to check the colour and it is brown .so i assume it has gear oil in it....

yea it could be i would think if the box was out to change the clutch
they would have put new oil in ..
they may have been tight a**'s and used the old oil.

so tomorrow i will change the oil anyway as its a little stiff when changing gears.
i guess its better to be safe than sorry..

thanks guys

ps ..can i get lubrizol from peps or repco
or do i have to get it from ford??????????
